OVERVIEW:


The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (HMSG) is a leading voice for contemporary art and culture and provides a national platform for the art and artists of our time.

We seek to share the transformative power of modern and contemporary art with audiences at all levels of awareness and understanding by creating meaningful, personal experiences in which art, artists, audiences, and ideas converge.

We enhance public understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through acquisition, exhibitions, education and public programs, conservation, and research.

To fulfill its mission, HMSG develops collaborative relationships with institutions and organizations within the Smithsonian, the United States, and abroad.

Designer by architect Gordon Bunshaft, the museum's elevated circular building has 60,000 square feet of exhibition space inside and nearly four acres outside in its multilevel Sculpture Garden and Plaza.


The incumbent serves as Director of Exhibits, Design, and Special Projects of the HMSG, comprised of exhibit (3D) design, 2D graphic design, fabrication, installation, and audio/visual functions of the museum, and reports to the Museum's Deputy Director.

Incumbent holds primary responsibility for the planning, design, production, installation and maintenance of exhibitions as well as public and non-public spaces, in keeping with established policies, standards, and requirements of HMSG.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervision_**- Supervises and directs day-to-day functions of Exhibits, Design, and Special Projects staff and serves as a member of the museum's senior management team, providing leadership to the department's technical and create staff.


  • Works with subordinate supervisors to plan and coordinate work to be accomplished; prioritizes assignments and work projects to ensure that deadlines are met, and ensures all department purchasing and procurement conforms with SI and HSMG process and policies.
  • Monitors work in process, reviews completed work, and recommends personnel actions.

_Planning and Design_

  • Incumbent is responsible for short
- and long-range program planning for the exhibitions program at HMSG, as well as minor and major reconfigurations of office and gallery space to address changing needs.

  • Reviews, evaluates, and implements changes in the overall Museum and sculpture garden exhibition program, and conceives designs for the presentation of the exhibitions, and participates as necessary in all phases of exhibition design and construction.
  • Assesses impact of special events, building projects, and capital improvements on the Museum's collection and program schedule. Proposes solutions to protect art, keeps other projects on track, and schedules and implements any changes to installations necessary and agreed upon by the senior management team.

_Exhibition Design_

  • As a designer for changing exhibition and permanent gallery installations at HMSG, the incumbent works to develop appropriate and attractive visual ideas for exhibition presentations in consultation with curators or program officials.
  • Provides design and technical expertise and evaluates resources, schedule, and budget to insure the realization of permanent and temporary exhibitions, capital improvement, and maintenance projects.
