- Possession of a valid State of West Virginia motor vehicle operator's license.
- Possession of a valid state of West Virginia Commercial Driver's License, Class B, with passenger and school bus endorsements or willing to obtain.
- General knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines.
- Considerable knowledge and a high degree of skill in the use of automotive shop tools such as tune-up equipment, drills, pressers, grinders, micrometers, boring bars, gauges, reamers, brake relining and drum grinding machines, valve refacing and seat grinding tools.
- Ability to diagnose defects in automotive equipment and to remedy defects.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Has certifiable experience as a Mechanic.
- Knowledge of retrofitting and maintaining Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs).
- This job is classified as requiring a heavy to very heavy work capacity.
- Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as a Mechanic.
- Remove and install engines, transmissions, clutches, and steering assemblies.
- Inspect buses to determine repairs to be made as time permits.
- Adjust rods, brakes and make minor repairs as required.
- Undertake the repair of body and chassis units.
- Keep daily records of repair work accomplished.
- Assist in servicing buses with gas, oil and parts as required.
- Promote high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work-connected areas.
- Retrofit buses with Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs).
- Provide training in retrofitting and maintaining Diesel Oxidation Catalysts (DOCs) on all buses.
- Participate in in-service training as directed.
- Maintain positive work habits.
- Perform duties efficiently and productively.
- Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
- Assistant transporting students on daily runs when other options have been exhausted.
- Develop policy and procedure for support service areas.
- Develop job duties and task lists for service employees.
- Make available the necessary equipment and supplies needed to perform a task.
- Develop and coordinate work schedules including substitutes as needed.
- Maintain accurate and complete records including time sheets.
- Prepare monthly and annual reports for local, state and federal offices.
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory for area of supervision.
- Be knowledgeable of policies relating to personnel.
- Be proficient in the use of basic computer operations including work processing, spreadsheet functions and email.
- Coordinate and direct support services.
- Provide needed training for employees in the area of specialization.
- Oversee the requisition and allocation of supplies.
- Oversee budgetary needs for area of assignment.
- Provide safety information and training for assigned area of responsibility and promote a high standard of safety and cleanliness at the work site.
- Assist the Superintendent/Administrator of Operations/Supervisor of Transportation/Assistant Administration as requested in the interviewing, evaluation and separation of personnel.
- Deal with difficult situations among employees in a fair and consistent manner
- Be knowledgeable of all aspects of the specific supervisory area as it relates to the job.
- Provide leadership and support in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Coordinate personnel work assignments based on training and abilities.
- Maintain confidentiality in all aspects relating to personnel.
- Prioritize and multi-task responsibilities by order of importance.
- Operate with great latitude using independent judgment as required.
- Provide written assessments and reports to Superintendent, Board of Education, and WVDE upon request.
- Communicate job tasks in an effective manner.
- Work effectively as a team member.
- Establish good public and employee relations.
- Act as a liaison between departments.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Transportation Supervisor and/or Administrator of Operations.
