    Description

    Springfield Public Schools seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Type-A Van/Bus Driver Pool. Under general supervision, the Type-A Van/School Bus Driver position operates school buses and/or other District vehicles that requires a minimum of a Class C Commercial Driver License (CDL) to transport small groups of children to and from school and related activities in a safe, timely, economical, and professional manner. Duties assigned to employee include cleaning of buses and inspecting the vehicle to insure safe operation. Safety and welfare of the students is always the top priority.

    Distinguished from a school bus driver by the limited requirement to only operate vehicles that require a minimum of a Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without an Air Brake Endorsement. These include maximum gross vehicle weight ratings of 19,500 pounds and capacity not to exceed 36.

    Essential Functions

    Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Operates the vehicles that require up to a Class C (CDL) in accordance with Oregon Revised Statutes, Department of Motor Vehicle Code, School Bus Driver's Manual, and District Policies and Procedures.
    • Delivers assigned bus to the bus garage for regular maintenance and service work as per arranged schedule.
    • Attends in-service and workshop trainings; applying training to driving and behavior management responsibilities.
    • Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours, as required.
    • Completes appropriate logs, forms and paperwork, as required.
    • Reports mechanical, safety, sanitary, fire, and other hazards/questionable items immediately to supervisor or District mechanic.
    • Applies energy conservation and maintains cost effectiveness measures while operating district vehicles.
    • Conducts pre-trip inspection of the vehicle and reports deficiencies immediately to supervisor or District mechanic.
    • Accepts the responsibility of transporting school-age children safely under all types of conditions.
    • Maintains the assigned vehicle by cleaning/sanitizing items such as: windshield (inside & out), mirrors, light lenses, floors, and seats.
    • Reports any problems or safety hazards which exist or occur on routing, such as traffic, stops, physical barriers, students (both on and off the bus).
    • Maintains a current and correct route schedule - Stops and Times.
    • Greets students in a pleasant and friendly manner at bus stops.
    • Maintains a safe, orderly atmosphere on the bus at all times by seeking compliance with District policies through PBIS strategies.
    • Administers first aid as required and takes immediate emergency action in serious illnesses or injuries.
    • Completes daily maintenance checklist accurately as appropriate.
    • Exercises good judgment and discretion in operating a vehicle in all weather and traffic conditions.
    • Loads and operates all chair lifts provided for the transportation of the child.
    • Performs evacuation drills, as required.
    • Performs pre-trip inspections on bus prior to driving in accordance with District procedures.
    • Adheres to assigned daily schedule.
    • Replenishes fuel and oil and ensures bus is in good repair and proper working order.
    • Drives District vehicles and buses safely while transporting students to and from all locations.
    • Transports students and adult chaperones on school activities during and outside of school hours.
    • Monitors and maintains discipline and control of all passengers on buses and issues citations as consistent with District policy.
    • Reports student disruptions.
    • Assists students loading onto bus, conducts required passenger instruction as required.
    • Substitutes for other drivers, as needed.
    • Other related duties may be assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications

    Education/Experience
    • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
    • Possession of a valid State of Oregon Driver's license.
    • Five (5) years of successful driving experience.
    • A clean DMV driving record (no accidents or citations in the last 3-years)
    • Valid State of Oregon Commerical Drivers License (CDL) *
    • Ability to successfully complete a physical examination, required DMV testing, required ODE classes, drug screening and any required physical strength testing.
    • Ability to obtain and hold a valid First Aid/CPR card and pass SafeSchools training modules as assigned.

    • If Candidates do not have a current CDL, they will be required to obtain a CDL within the District time frame.
    Desired Qualifications
    • Previous school bus or CDL required driving experience.
    • Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.)

    Knowledge of: Applicable driving (school bus) laws and regulations; student behavioral management techniques; District policies and procedures; safety and first aid practices and procedures; tie down procedures of special equipment such as wheelchairs.

    Ability to: possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential function of the position with or without reasonable accommodation; operate any and all District buses and bus equipment; maintain a safe driving record with District or personal vehicles; drive safely under pressure of time constraints, student misbehavior, hazardous road conditions, and traffic demands, remain available for daily driving assignments; understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; maintain appropriate appearance and attire; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy; greet stakeholders; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies, procedures and other pertinent information; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members and resolves conflict in a professional manner; maintain records; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions.

    Work Direction, Lead & Supervisory Responsibilities:

    No assigned permanent staff to supervise. May train and provide work directions, as directed by supervisor, to appropriate staff and volunteers.

    Physical Effort:

    The employee must have the physical ability to carry or drag a 125-pound weight 30 feet in 30 seconds. Must meet physical requirements for school bus drivers as outlined in ORS

    Working Conditions:

    School Bus Drivers have a considerable amount of contact with students and are required to maintain discipline on the bus in order to ensure the safety of students. Exposure to inclement weather and the hazards associated with vehicular travel are routine for this position. The School Bus Driver must be able to deal with physically, emotionally, and mentally handicapped students of varying ages in a stress-free, mature, and positive manner. Noise level is usually moderate, but occasionally high depending upon student population and activities. The employee will be exposed to bodily fluids, bloodborne pathogens, sick and/or contagious students. The employee may be exposed to toxic chemicals (for disinfecting).
