Responsibilities
Locksmiths are responsible for installing and repairing locks and electronic security devices in Grand Central Terminal


THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Qualifications

  • Install, modify, repair, remove, and troubleshoot various types of locks
  • Rekeys locks by swapping cores to accept new key
  • Cut keys to given specifications for new and existing lock using key cutting machines
  • Pick locks to gain access
  • Install, maintain, repair, and replace electronic security devices; ex: Magnetic Locks, Electronic Card Access systems, and ADA doors
  • Maintain records of locks, keys, and equipment inventory electronically
  • Conduct security assessment by reviewing area layout and offer recommendations
  • Remain uptodate on craft and keep license current
  • Maintain equipment by cleaning, adjusting, and calibrating key machines, cutters, etc.
  • Maintain clean and organized work environment
  • Read, understand, and follow reference manuals, instructions, and schematics
  • Specify needed equipment and materials
  • Operate company motor vehicle to pick up materials
  • Follow safety policies and procedures
  • Responsible for on the job training and supervision of new hires
  • Provide professional and helpful customer service
  • Abide by code of ethics and conduct
  • Perform other duties as assigned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Minimum of two (2) years experience as locksmith, AND
  • Must possess NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs Locksmith and Keymaking License

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Ability to quickly and accurately perform basic mental mathematical calculations; reading comprehension ability; interpersonal skills; customer service oriented; mechanical aptitude; familiar with electrical wiring for low voltage locks; ability to read schematics; skilled in exercising independent judgment; ability to anticipate and analyze problems and take corrective actions; ability to evaluate a situation to make decisions and work under pressure; written and verbal communication skills; ability to multi-task; ability to function effectively under changing priorities; knowledge of operating and safety rules; must be safety conscious


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:


  • Must possess NYC Dept. of Consumer Affairs Locksmith and Keymaking License
  • Must complete Metro-North respirator training and certification within 30 days of job award
  • Must complete training for Confined Spaces, Right to Know, Vehicles, Lifts, Bloodborne Pathogens, and Roadway Worker Safety
  • Must have personal tool box with locksmith tools and hand tools

Rate of pay
The starting rate for this position is
$28.10(70% of the full rate).

The annual wage progression scale is as follows:

Year 1=70% > Year 2=70% > Year 3=75% > Year 4=80% > Year 5=85% > Year 6=85% > Year 7=90% > Year 8=100%.The full 100% rate of pay is
$40.15.


This rate has been established by the collective bargaining unit and is non-negotiable.

An exception may be granted for a journeyman rate to anyone who has one of the following:

  • Completed a four-year, bona fide sheet machinists apprenticeship program, OR
  • Has had four (4) years of fulltime practical experience in the craft and can provide proof thereof (by means of a card or certificate).
  • For those approved for a journeyman rate, the wage progression scale is as follows: 80>80>90>90>100% of the full rate of pay.

Other Information
Pursuant to the New York State Public Officers Law & the MTA Code of Ethics, all employees who hold a policymaking position must file an Annual Statement of Financial Disclosure (FDS) with the NYS Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government (the Commission)
