    Chief Objective of Position:

    Christopher Newport University invites applications and nominations for the position of Vice President for University Advancement. The Vice President reports directly to the University's new President, Rear Admiral (ret) William G. Kelly. This cabinet-level position requires a seasoned leader with exceptional strategic vision, relationship-building skills, and a proven track record in philanthropy, donor stewardship, and institutional advancement. The Vice President for University Advancement serves as a key ambassador for the university, fostering strong partnerships with alumni, donors, community leaders, and other stakeholders to enhance the institution's reputation, financial sustainability, and overall impact.

    Work Tasks:

    The Vice President for University Advancement is a member of the President's Cabinet and serves as the chief administrative officer to the university's three affiliated foundations. The Vice President is a passionate and inspiring leader, and has the primary responsibility for planning and directing the fundraising and alumni programs for the University. The Office of University Advancement has 25 talented staff members headquartered in a newly opened, spacious building, and is home to three distinct departments: Development, Alumni Engagement, and Advancement Services.

    The Vice President provides strong, creative, energetic, and strategic leadership on all advancement initiatives, programs, and functions, both short and long-term, with responsibility for building a major-gifts-focused culture of philanthropy and significantly increasing annual contributed revenue. The Vice President will serve as chief campaign officer for any future University campaigns.

    The Vice President is responsible for the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of resources from individuals, corporations, and foundations in the continuing development of private support for the institution.

    Additional Key Responsibilities:
    1. Strategic Planning: Develop and implement comprehensive advancement strategies aligned with the university's strategic priorities to maximize philanthropic support, alumni engagement, and institutional advancement.2. Fundraising Leadership: Provide visionary leadership and direction for all fundraising activities, including major gifts, annual giving, planned giving, and corporate partnerships, ensuring the attainment of ambitious fundraising goals.3. Alumni Relations: Oversee the development and execution of initiatives to cultivate and strengthen relationships with alumni, fostering a lifelong connection to the University and leveraging alumni support for institutional priorities.4. Donor Stewardship: Develop and implement stewardship programs to recognize and cultivate relationships with donors, ensuring meaningful and impactful engagement that fosters continued support and investment in the university.5. Team Leadership: Recruit, develop, and manage a high-performing advancement team, providing guidance, support, and mentorship to staff members to achieve departmental goals and objectives.6. Collaboration: Collaborate closely with University leadership, academic departments, and other key stakeholders to align advancement efforts with institutional priorities and ensure a unified approach to fundraising and alumni engagement.7. Strategic Communication: Collaborate with the University's office of communications and public relations in strategic communication efforts to advance the mission, vision, and goals of the university.8. Compliance and Ethics: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards governing fundraising activities, promoting transparency, integrity, and accountability in all advancement initiatives.

    The successful candidate will have an extensive and proven record in developing, implementing, and managing a full range of fundraising programs; demonstrated experience in managing people and resources to meet desired goals; exceptional verbal and written communications skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders; be a creative team builder with excellent leadership skills; must have the ability to work effectively with donors, alumni, faculty, staff, students, volunteers, and community leaders; possess a strong passion and appreciation for the vision and values of the University and have demonstrated skills in articulating that passion clearly and persuasively; strong strategic planning and analytical skills, with the ability to develop and execute effective advancement strategies aligned with organizational goals; have significant experience in working with boards and volunteers and developing their potential as fundraisers; knowledge of best practices, trends, and emerging technologies in institutional advancement, philanthropy, and strategic communication; be able to work flexible hours and travel.

    Preference will be given to candidates with direct experience in developing and leading comprehensive campaigns to include prospecting, conducting feasibility studies, working with senior management, and producing campaign materials; demonstrated track record of success in fundraising, donor cultivation, and alumni relations, with a proven ability to secure major gifts and meet ambitious fundraising targets. The successful candidate must embrace a high level of personal and professional integrity.

    Required Education:

    A master's degree in a relevant field or a bachelor's degree and work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree is required.
