SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Fitness Coordinator, the Fitness Instructor conducts general fitness/aerobic classes at the YMCA. All functions are performed in accordance with Central Coast YMCA policies and bylaws.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead group exercise classes.
  • Record attendance and maintain progress records.
  • Enforce all facility rules.
  • Report accident or injuries and complete accident reports as required.
  • Sets a positive example in conduct and personal habits.
  • Sets appropriate physical and behavioral limits to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all YMCA participants.
  • Set up equipment or facility, store equipment and secure facility upon activity completion.
  • Maintains a clean and safe environment.
  • Always treat people with dignity, respect, and a friendly, helpful attitude.
  • Aerobic instructors are responsible for securing their own substitutes. All substitutes must be approved by Interim Executive Director.

GENERAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Experienced as a participant in exercise class activity and YMCA Basic Fitness Leadership Training
  • CPR and First Aid certified. The YMCA does not pay certification fees unless preapproved in writing by the branch executive director
  • Strong public relations and communications skills
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment
  • Possess leadership qualities
  • Mature, reliable, and conscientious
  • Able to relate well with children and adults
  • Belief in the mission of the YMCA
  • Attends all required trainings and staff meetings.
  • Arrives on time for scheduled work shifts and performs work duties the entire shift.
  • Refers anything that appears out of the ordinary to their supervisor.
  • Follows all Central Coast YMCA policies and branch procedures.
  • Acts safely and acceptably, follows established safety procedures, uses appropriate safeguards, and observes common sense safety rules in all onthejob activities. Ensures coworkers do the same.
  • Conducts self in a manner that reflects credit on the Central Coast YMCA and encourages others to do the same.
  • Establishes and maintains effective channels of communication and a professional relationship with coworkers, management, members, program participants and guests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Education and/or Experience:


  • High school diploma or GED or completion of high school equivalency preferred.
  • Experienced as a participant in exercise class activity and YMCA Basic Fitness Leadership Training
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate group instruction

Language Skills:

Must have:

  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, coworkers, volunteers, members, donors, and the general public.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is preferred but not required.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

  • At least 18 years of age.

  • Eventempered and able to adjust tasks by changing priorities.
  • A neat, clean appearance. Other than the conservative use of earrings, visible body piercings are unacceptable. Visible pierced tongues are not allowed.
  • No visible tattoos tattoos must be covered.
