    EMPLOYMENT SCREENINGS:
    Brenau University will conduct criminal background checks on all persons being considered for initial employment. In some circumstances, an FBI fingerprint report may be necessary to satisfy the requirement. Once employed, employees must hold and continue to maintain a favorable criminal history background. Random background checks are performed.

    Credit checks may be performed on candidates/employees who are selected for a position that regularly engages in handling credit cards or other company monies.

    A Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) may be performed during the hiring process, or as part of a random check.

    MVR checks are required to meet insurance requirements for those employees operating a university vehicle or participating in any driving activity on behalf of Brenau University, (including operating a golf cart, rented vehicle or one's personal vehicle).

    Employees who travel must be at least 25 years of age, have a valid Georgia driver's license, and good driving record.

    All employees who operate university vehicles, who are employed in a sensitive position, or who travel regularly as part of their job responsibilities may be subject to post-hire drug screening and random drug-screening.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Graduate of an accredited PA Program with a master's degree (doctorate preferred) or prior experience in clinical education at an academic institution
    • If a PA, eligible for Georgia Physician Assistant licensure
    • If a PA, current NCCPA certification or other certification appropriate to qualifications
    • At least 3 years of prior clinical experience; other professional experience will be considered
    • At least 2 years of prior academic experience in a PA program; other academic experience will be considered
    • A record of involvement within the professional community, preferably with a knowledge of the local medical community
    • Ability to function well within a collegial, collaborative work environment

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    ROLE OF THE DIRECTOR OF CLINICAL EDUCATION:

    • The Director of Clinical Education (DCE) works closely and collaborates with the Department Chair and Program Director (Chair/PD) and Assistant Program Director (APD).
    • The DCE reports directly to the PA Chair/PD.
    • Generally, the tasks of the DCE are focused on the coordination and planning in all aspects of the clinical phase of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies (DPAS) program. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, academic advising, serving on program and university committees, responsibilities relevant to all aspects of student supervised clinical practice experiences (SCPEs), participating in DPAS program development, implementation and assessment and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations. The DCE performs all other duties as directed by the Chair/PD, the Dean of the Ivester College of Health Sciences (ICHS), the Brenau University Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs (VPAA), and the Brenau University President or designee.
    Scholarship


    • Remain current within his or her academic discipline. Lead by example with his or her performance in the areas of teaching and advising students, and in participation in professional academic venues.
    • Participate in faculty development and research within the mission of the University.
    • Actively promote scholarship among students.
    Administrative duties


    • Work closely with the clinical team, clinical support coordinator, site coordinators, AHEC and clinical preceptors to facilitate SCPEs for all students at multiple sites in the region.
    • Assist in the recruitment, development, maintenance, and evaluation of clinical sites for experiential training to ensure that these sites meet ARC-PA Accreditation Standards and program defined learning outcomes.
    • Coordinate site visits and review student progress during the clinical phase of the program.
    • Coordinate the clinical year curriculum and ensure compliance with department policies and educational objectives during the clinical phase of the program.
    • In conjunction with the Chair/PD, APD and Medical Director, develop learning outcomes for SCPEs as required by the ARC-PA Accreditation Standards and develop, implement and evaluate a method to assess that each student has met the program-defined learning outcomes.
    • Develop, implement and document methods of assessing clinical sites and preceptors in accordance with the ARC-PA Accreditation Standards.
    • Manage CORE (or other clinical tracking software) and develop, implement and evaluate, in collaboration with the Chair/PD and APD, methods of assessing the clinical phase of the program as part of ongoing self-assessment.
    • Recruit guest lecturers as needed for end of rotation (EOR) activities when students return to campus during the clinical phase of the program.
    • Assist with long-range planning. Prepare materials for periodic program reviews, accreditation reports, and other external reviews.
    • Oversee the use of the university's Learning Management System (LMS, e.g., Canvas) and other university/program management platforms for the clinical phase courses and assessments and serve as a departmental expert on these systems.
    • Develop, implement and document methods of assessing the clinical curriculum and student /program outcomes in accordance with the ARC-PA Accreditation Standards and NCCPA Content Blueprint.
    • Facilitate curricular enhancement and implement curricular improvements and innovation, as appropriate, including methods of assessing the effectiveness of the changes.
    • Oversee the onboarding, orientation and coordination of payment to clinical year guest lecturers and/or clinical preceptors, if applicable, as per university, college and departmental policies.
    • Develop, maintain and regularly review a system to monitor and document the progress of each student during the clinical phase of the program that will allow for prompt identification of deficiencies in knowledge or skills and establish a means for remediation. Oversee implementation of remediation efforts during the clinical phase, documenting outcomes for use in the program's ongoing process of self-assessment.
    • Update student assignments of a principal faculty advisor for the clinical phase and orient advisors to their role and the required processes for monitoring student performance and progression during the clinical phase of the program. Assure advisors document all advising sessions.
    • Initiate the updating of the program's materials in the Catalog and the Department of PA Studies Clinical Handbook.
    • Recommend budgetary considerations for the clinical phase of the program to the Chair/PD.
    • As assigned by Chair/PD, participate in planned recruiting activities and student retention activities.
    Teaching


    • Serve as instructor for clinical courses and other didactic courses, as assigned.
    • Prepare syllabi, book lists, objectives and learning outcomes, as required.
    • Prepare assigned lectures using applicable technology.
    • Assume assigned role in test preparation and other methods of evaluating student performance.
    • Participate in text selection or other teaching modalities.
    • Assess student progress in courses, prepare and submit final grades, communicate with students' faculty advisors notifying APD and/or Chair/PD of any "at-risk" students.
    • Instruct and supervise students in assigned clinical practice labs.
    • Evaluate student performance in clinical courses and clinical simulation formative and summative examinations.
    • Critique student assignments and provide prompt feedback.
    • Conduct class evaluations and complete other evaluations in accordance with college and university policy.
    • Assist with student tutorial/remediation sessions.
    • Keep informed of current trends and new approaches to instruction via professional development activities.
    Advising

    As advisor of a specific number of students (advisees), the DCE shall:


    • Meet formally with each advisee a minimum of once during each semester of the program to review student performance.
    • Provide opportunity for the student to verbalize his/her progress to date.
    • Provide opportunities for the students to discuss their adjustment processes and approaches to meeting the expectations of the Program.
    • Meet with any student who has performed unsatisfactorily either academically or professionally.
    • Refer students to counselors as needed.
    • Bring to faculty meetings for discussion information on any student considered at risk, needing additional monitoring, and requiring additional SCPEs or any other form of remediation to meet program-defined learning outcomes.
    • Maintain up-to-date records on student advisees and interactions with advisees.
    • Discuss with Chair/PD any student issues regarding an advisee's inability to successfully progress through the program.
    • Assess student's readiness for the completion of the program.
    Service

    The Director of Clinical Education is expected to:

    • Participate in ARC-PA accreditation reviews and visits.
    • Attend and appropriately contribute to university, ICHS, and departmental faculty meetings.
    • Participate in the development, revision, and updating of the program's mission statement and curricular materials.
    • Participate in student admissions and interviewing processes, selecting appropriate applicants for admission.
    • Maintain records and do appropriate follow up on all correspondence pertaining to applicants, students, course assignments and preceptors as applicable/assigned.
    • Assume responsibilities in grant-related projects as assigned.
    • Assume other duties within the department when needed and feasible.
    • Serve as an elected or appointed representative on departmental, ICHS, and/or university committees.
    Community Relations Within and Outside of Brenau


    • Represent the department within the Brenau community through committee service, attendance at university-sponsored events, and the establishment of collegial relationships with other faculty and administrators.
    • Represent the university to the community in a professional and positive way through volunteer service, participation in community events, and professional affiliations.
    • Maintain a strong and visible presence in local, state, national and international professional activities.

    Environmental and Working Conditions:
    Normal environment found in an educational setting. Some exposure to outdoors and varying weather conditions may be required.


    Physical Demands and Aptitudes:
    Some lifting and or carrying objects weighing 25 + lbs may be required.


    Work Hours:
    37.5 hours per week. Generally Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5p.m. Hours may be extended to meet the needs of the department.


    Home Campus Designation:
    This position is an on-ground position in Gainesville, GA.
