Job Summary


The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is the hub of Harvard Kennedy School's research, teaching, and training in international security and diplomacy, environmental and resource issues, and science and technology policy.

In 2021, the Belfer Center was named a "Center of Excellence" by the University of Pennsylvania's Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program, in recognition of the Center's six consecutive years as the world's #1 university-affiliated think tank.


The Center has a dual mission: (1) to provide leadership in advancing policy-relevant knowledge about the most important challenges of international security and other critical issues where science, technology, environmental policy, and international affairs intersect; and (2) to prepare future generations of leaders for these arenas.

Position Description
This position will work closely with Professor Rosenbach, support staff, and a small student research team.

This position will play a key role in:

  • Planning, conducting research for, marketing, and executing highlevel events, including large public events and small private working groups.
  • Coordinating with highprofile visiting guests and fellows.
  • Assisting with the facilitation of HKS courses taught by Eric Rosenbach, including a course on policy design and delivery and a course on emerging technologies and national security.
  • Contributing to research papers for publication on the Defense, Emerging Technology, and Strategy webpage, and potentially to external publications.
  • Onboarding and offboarding student researchers.
  • Other job related duties, as required.
  • Be a selfstarter with keen attention to detail.
  • Be skilled in managing multiple diverse activities simultaneously, delivering on commitments, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgment.
  • Be a teamplayer willing to work on areas outside of typical portfolio.
  • Have experience in an academic or thinktank setting.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 1+ year of workrelated experience. Internships may count towards this requirement.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Strong preference for higher education experience.
  • The ability to communicate (verbally and written) persuasively, concisely, and clearly.
  • A track record of delivering on commitment, and operating with speed, accuracy, and strong judgement.
  • The ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
  • Capacity to manage, prioritize, and respond to customers in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office suite and the internet and willingness/ability to learn and adapt to new software and technologies.
  • Ability to work independently in a fastpaced environment and to respond to lastminute changes and shifting priorities.
  • Interpersonal, problemsolving, and timemanagement skills.
  • Must be proactive, take initiative, exhibit sound judgment, have excellent organizational skills and be able to see projects through to completion.
  • Ability to assess needs, set priorities, and deal effectively with stressful situations.
  • Experience in successfully managing projects from inception through completion.
  • An understanding of and ability to manage highly confidential information.
  • The ability to communicate with a diverse group of people with sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex organization and across multiple units and levels.
  • A strong customer service orientation, and excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be efficient, proactive, and have strong attention to detail, as well as be able to multitask and to meet firm deadlines.
  • General interest in/intellectual curiosity of/knowledge of topic.

  • Management skills, including the ability to coach, mentor, and develop staff and provide constructive, direct, and actionable positive and corrective feedback.
  • Strategic planning skills with the ability to set priorities, establish clear directions, and lay out work in a wellplanned and organized manner.
  • Supervisory experience demonstrative of a commitment to collaborate within a strong teamoriented environment across multiple simultaneous initiatives.
Technical

  • Technical aptitude and a love of being handson.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts to a nontechnical audience.
  • Project management skills and/or PMP certification.
  • Ability to assess and learn new technologies quickly.
  • Experience as a superuser or administrator of Canvas, Zoom, Salesforce, Qualtrics, MS Suite, Google Suite, Slack, Trello, AirTable.
