    Food Service Worker I (Safety) Position at Porterville Developmental Center

    The Dietetic Registry at Porterville Developmental Center offers opportunities to cover temporary needs in the unit and main kitchen areas. Assignments are based on departmental requirements. The food service worker I in the registry is expected to work at any location in the unit kitchen with different client groups or at the main kitchen based on operational needs.

    • Under the supervision of various roles, such as Food Service Supervisor I/II, Food Manager, Dietetics Assistant Director, and Supervising Cook I/Production, the responsibilities involve preparing food and beverages, cleaning and maintaining food service equipment and work areas, instructing helpers, and handling related tasks.

    Employees may assist the kitchen staff in food preparation or serve food in dining areas. They are also expected to perform other related tasks as needed. In unit kitchens, food is typically served cafeteria-style. Employees handle food preparation, cooking, equipment maintenance, and working with helpers from the resident population.

    This is a Limited-Term position that can be extended up to 24 months. Telework is not applicable for this role; it requires in-person presence. Interested individuals must take and pass the Food Service Worker I (Safety) examination.

    Working Conditions

    Working conditions involve exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, industrial food service equipment, and wet surfaces. Employees may come into contact with residents exhibiting unpredictable behavior, as well as with communicable diseases, body fluids, and cleaning chemicals. The role may involve working under stressful conditions at times.

    Physical Demands

    The position demands sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to handle physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging situations. It requires full body motion, lifting, pushing, pulling, and manual dexterity. The role involves standing, walking, heavy lifting, bending, twisting, and other physical activities.

    Minimum Requirements and Additional Documents can be found in the corresponding specifications. The position details include a Job Code, Working Title, Classification, and Work Location in Tulare County. The job type is a 12-Month Limited Term with intermittent hours.

    The California Department of Developmental Services provides services to individuals with developmental disabilities, including intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism, and related conditions. The Department operates developmental centers and community facilities, along with nonprofit regional centers to offer support to individuals and families.

    Special requirements include a medical evaluation for selected candidates. Electronic application submission is preferred. A completed application package and passing the safety examination are necessary for consideration.
