The Beacon House Association of San Pedro is a state-certified, residential substance abuse recovery program for men with a sincere desire to achieve long-lasting abstinence from drugs and alcohol.

As residents of the Beacon House, the men are provided with food, shelter, counseling, peer group support, educational opportunities, and career training through our social enterprise programs, including the Beacon House Thrift stores.

This allows the men to develop the life, career, and social skills they need to build a foundation in recovery, while preparing them for a strong reintegration into the job market and a bright future when they return to their family, home, and community.

Position Overview


The San Pedro Retail Associate will be responsible for the day-to-day operational & functions of the Beacon House Thrift Shop - Long Beach.

The role of the Thrift Store Retail Associate encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at optimizing daily store operations.

These tasks include maintaining an appealing and well-organized store layout and displays, delivering exceptional customer service, upholding a consistent standard of professionalism, as well as efficiently managing stock and arranging merchandise.


Specific Responsibilities
Greet customers warmly and assist them with their inquiries and needs.

Provide friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive customer service to enhance the shopping experience.

Offer assistance in locating items, answering questions, and providing product information.

Maintain a visually appealing store environment by ensuring shelves, racks, and displays are organized, clean, and well-stocked.

Regularly refresh displays to highlight featured items and promote sales.

Ensure merchandise is properly tagged and priced, and update price tags as necessary.


Represent the thrift store in a professional manner by adhering to dress code and maintaining a courteous and helpful attitude.

Communicate effectively with customers, team members, and management regarding store policies, promotions, and any issues that may arise.

Process customer transactions accurately and efficiently using the POS system.

Handle cash, credit/debit card transactions, and issue receipts as required.

Balance cash drawer at the beginning and end of each shift.

Receive, inspect, and organize incoming merchandise donations and shipments.

Restock shelves and racks as needed to ensure a consistent selection for customers.

Accept and document donations from customers, providing receipts as necessary.

Sort and categorize donated items.

Maintain a clean and organized donation area.

Monitor store for potential theft and unauthorized activities.

Collaborate with fellow team members to ensure efficient store operations.

Assist with training new staff members and share knowledge of store procedures.

Participate in and assist with store promotions, sales events, and fundraisers as required.

Help create visually appealing displays to highlight special promotions.

Be willing to assist with various tasks and responsibilities as needed, including helping in different store sections.

Actively listen to customer feedback and suggestions, forwarding insights to management when necessary.

Stay informed about store products, sales, and current trends in the thrift industry

Participate in opening and closing procedures, including securing the store and ensuring all tasks are completed.


Additional Responsibilities
Report allegations of misconduct to the BHASP Human Resources Department and the Director of Enterprise Development.

Maintain current knowledge of BHASP/BHTS policies and procedures as they relate to personnel and residents; monitor for adherence to policies and procedures

Aid in the onboarding process of new volunteers/residents by setting them up with the Beacon

House Thrift Training Management and Career Exploration Platform and ensuring they complete the online training modules.
