- Performs routine tests such as biological, chemical, histological, or hematological tests, use laboratory apparatus and testing equipment and follow standardized procedures to provide data for use in research or scientific experiments.
- Collect human specimens such as blood and tissue samples for use in tests and analyses.
- Operate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, counters and spectrophotometers for laboratory tests and research or scientific experiments.
- Maintain the cleanliness and safety of laboratory according to established standards and procedures utilizing procedures such as disposing of contaminants, washing, and sterilizing glassware and inspecting temperature control equipment.
- Give instructions to individuals and groups concerning laboratory techniques and use of equipment and responds to inquiries from the public, other agencies, and private industries on such matters as laboratory test results, normal test ranges, appropriate tests, or collection of samples.
- Maintain records on such matters as tests performed, test results, methods, materials, and procedures used, and inventory records.
- Prepare reports concerning such matters and test results and quality control, in order to provide data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or for research and scientific experiments.
- Perform related duties such as assigning numbers or codes to samples or specimens for identification purposes or for testing; accession, repackage and/or maintain submitted drugs and other evidence for disposition; duties may include categorizing, filing, compiling and/or providing copies of records, journals, manuals, and reference books; and reading pertinent published materials to keep abreast of developments in the field.

Description
The Massachusetts State Police Crime Lab is seeking a Laboratory Technician I position within the Forensic Chemistry section. The incumbent will undergo on-the-job training and education within the MA State Police Crime Laboratory's accreditation framework so they may meet the standards for becoming a fully competent Laboratory Technician I and will apply basic principles, practices, and techniques to the work and duties performed.The incumbent will be expected to conduct routine professional communication with units within the crime laboratory as well as units' stakeholders, in-person or through other means. Incumbent receives direct supervision from employees of higher grade at the Forensic Scientist III level or higher.
NOTE: This position is not within the Forensic Scientist series.
As applicable to the unit's core function, through a formal training program, incumbents will:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical or professional experience in laboratory work in a recognized clinical, medical, hospital, chemical, water quality, public health, biological, bacteriological, marine sciences or materials testing laboratory, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree or higher with a major in medical technology, chemistry, bacteriology, food science and technology, environmental science, chemical or environmental engineering, wastewater technology, oceanography or the biological sciences may be substituted for the required experience.
II. The successful completion of one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, education toward a degree at a recognized medical or dental school may be substituted for the required experience.
III. The successful completion of training in a recognized school or hospital course or an American Medical Association (AMA) approved training program for laboratory technicians or medical technologists may be substituted for the required experience.
IV. Registration as a medical technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technicians or American Medical Technologists or as a bacteriologist by the National Registry of Microbiologists may be substituted for the required experience.
