Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project (MNSRP), located on the islands of Maui Nui (Maui, Molokai and Lanai), and stationed in Hamakuapoko, Maui. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: $4,434/Mon.

DUTIES: Assists with prioritizing and mission planning to fulfill overall project goals. Significantly contributes to field operation design, planning, and management. Assists with scheduling and deploying field staff and volunteers, coordinating logistics, and evaluating field staff and volunteers/interns. Trains and prepares staff and volunteers for field operations, with special emphasis on safety and quality data collection. Leads staff and volunteers during field operations to ensure proper field techniques. Implements protocol to conduct all operations according to accepted safety standards and established protocols. Fieldwork requires staff to drive project vehicles both on and off road, work in and around helicopters, handle air guns and pesticides, and handle technical equipment, such as acoustic song meters, game cameras, and Global Positioning System (GPS) units. Oversees collection of accurate and detailed records of field work. Precise navigational and field mapping capabilities are essential in order to accomplish and document tasks reliably. Operates a GPS unit to record data and downloads GPS units. Summarizes field data and links it to spatial data. Responsible for maintaining, inventorying, and ordering all supplies and equipment necessary for conducting operations. Oversees staff conducting base yard maintenance and maintaining project vehicles and equipment, including field gear and proper storage of herbicides. Assists with public relations activities and events, maintains good relationships with landowners, and other members of the public. Helps develop the support of landowners and the public for seabird projects. Assists MNSRP Manager with administrative tasks such as, but not limited to, procurement, travel, training, and employee time management.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.

EXPERIENCE

Two to three (2-3) years of experience in field activities related to natural resources management.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of Hawaiian seabird ecology, biota and threats from alien plant and animal invasions in Hawai'i. Knowledge of basic biological principles and ecosystem dynamics. Knowledge of field techniques used to locate and monitor and protect seabird species. Knowledge of spatial analysis, graphic representation, and use of relational databases.

ABILITIES & SKILLS

Must have excellent field operation design, planning, and implementation skills. Proficient at using Microsoft Office Suite, Trimble GPS system, and ArcGIS software. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs. Ability to accurately collect and store data for target species survey and control activities. Demonstrated ability to navigate in remote areas with and without a GPS unit. Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Able to confidently troubleshoot under difficult field conditions. Must possess a valid driver's license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be able to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Post Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to pass a post offer criminal background check. Must possess the American Red Cross Certification in First Aid/CPR (or be able to obtain and maintain the certificate following the training provided within three (3) months from date of hire) and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must be able to complete basic helicopter safety (A100) course within six (6) months from date of hire. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediately after hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Able to work outdoors on extremely rough terrain and under adverse weather conditions, up to five (5) consecutive days. Able to lift and carry up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
