    Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

    MONTHLY SALARY: $3,567/Mon.


    DUTIES: Implementsfieldoperationsrelatedtothe restoration, enhancement, and managementof native wildlifeand their habitats, on the island of Oahu. Implements key conservation activities to recover seabirds, waterbirds and conducts surveys to assess conditions related to wildlife habitat, population demographics, and invasive species presence in key management areas and units. Analyzes data from surveys to implement habitat enhancement activities (e.g., out-planting, invasive weed control, trail maintenance, fence maintenance, etc.). Supervises the deployment of predator traps and develops a check interval following DOFAW policies. Supervises and instructs field staff. Coordinates on-the-ground operations by communicating with landowners, other agency personnel, and the public. Maintains program vehicles, machinery, and equipment, used to conduct field operations. Coordinates project activities to ensure proper organizational duties are carried out.Drives project vehicle to work site and works in and around helicopters. Conducts a multitude of surveys to document operations based on establishedprotocolsanddirectives.Documentsdailyfieldactivities andprovides summariesandanalysisofdatawithsituationalupdatestoestablishprojectrecord keeping and accurate reporting. Collects data from surveys to determine success of habitat and population enhancement field work. Conducts alien plant monitoring and control, using mechanical and chemical techniques. Participates in outreach relations or volunteer trips on a monthly basis.


    PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION

    Associate's Degree from an accredited community college or universityin Natural ResourcesManagementor relatedfield. (HighSchool Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent and at least two (2) years of related natural/conservation work in Hawai'i or similar environment may substitute for an Associate's Degree.).

    EXPERIENCE

    At least one (1) year of manual labor or semi-skilled work experience, which includes at least three (3) months of natural resource management activities.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Knowledge of Hawaiian biota, local game mammal and threats from alien species to native ecosystems.

    ABILITIES & SKILLS

    Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.Ability tocarryoutfield operationssafely. Identification ofgame mammal species. Identification of common native and introduced plants. Ability to read maps and aerial photographs. Ability to work with small-mechanized equipment in a safe manner (chainsaws, etc.).Ability to calculate herbicide formulations and follow label instructions of herbicides usedincontrollingincipientweeds.Abilitytomakenecessarypreparations toaccomplishworkassignments. Ability to work on small boats in coastal near-shore waters.Mustpossessavaliddriver'slicense(and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai'i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment. Must be abletodrivea4-wheeldrivevehiclewithmanualorautomatictransmission. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass a criminal background check for working with minors. Must be able to complete chainsaw and basic helicopter training (A100) within twelve (12) months from date of hire and maintain throughout duration of employment. Must complete the online Hazard Communication training immediatelyafter hire or no later than employee's initial exposure to hazardous chemicals.

    PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

    Mustbeableandwillingtophysically perform,efficientlyandeffectivelyunderstrenuousoutdoorconditions(e.g., extremeweather,mosquitoes,steepterrain,etc.).Abilitytoliftandcarryup tofifty(50)poundsunassisted.Mustbeabletofly,viahelicopter,toremote areas to conduct field operations. Must be able to swim in rough ocean conditions.

    SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS:

    Associate's Degree from an accredited community college in the fields of Forestry, Wildlife Management, Natural ResourceManagementorrelatedfield.Experienceinuseofpesticidesandpower tools. Working knowledge of native Hawaiian bird species. Computer literacyandfamiliaritywithdataanalysisandpresentation.Field experience in an active resource or management program to protect ecosystems in Hawai'i or elsewhere.
