- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) tailored to meet the unique needs of each student with visual impairments.
- Provide direct instruction in core academic subjects, including Braille literacy, orientation and mobility skills, daily living skills, and assistive technology.
- Collaborate with classroom teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to ensure the integration of specialized instruction within the general education curriculum.
- Assess student progress regularly and adjust instructional strategies accordingly to maximize learning outcomes.
- Utilize a variety of teaching methodologies, adaptive materials, and assistive technologies to facilitate access to the curriculum and enhance student engagement.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment that promotes independence, self-advocacy, and positive social interactions among visually impaired students.
- Provide training and guidance to educational staff, parents, and caregivers on effective strategies for supporting visually impaired students in various educational settings.
- Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in the field of visual impairment education, and participate in professional development opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills.
- Advocate for the educational rights and needs of visually impaired students within the school community and beyond.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education, Visual Impairments Education, or a related field.
- Valid state teaching certification in Visual Impairments or willingness to obtain certification within a specified timeframe.
- Experience working with visually impaired students in an educational setting, preferably as a teacher or specialist.
- Proficiency in Braille literacy and familiarity with Braille transcription and tactile graphics.
- Knowledge of specialized instructional techniques, assessment tools, and assistive technologies for visually impaired students.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with students with disabilities.
