- Responsibilities include performing general surgical operations, outpatient ambulatory surgical procedures, outpatient, and inpatient general surgery consultations.
- The general surgeon is expected to follow each patient through the full continuum of care to include admissions, discharges, performing histories and physicals, assisting in the coordination of diagnostic tests and procedures prior to surgery, education and counseling of the patient and family members.
- Direct patient care in the inpatient and outpatient settings
- Provide care in the Surgical intensive care unit and acute care surgery.
- Provide diagnosis and treatment of adult patients in the surgical intensive care presenting with illnesses and injuries applicable to his/her practice, training, experience or current competence in ICU care.
- Order routine diagnostic imaging studies and labs.
- Participate actively in performance improvement and attend assigned meetings or process action teams.
- Work collaboratively with other specialties.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed by the supervisor or Chief of Staff.
- Participate in Clinical Video Telehealth delivery of care as required

Summary
The physician will report to the section chief of their specialty, within the Surgical service. Program goals and objectives are provided.
As an independent practitioner, the incumbent is responsible for planning and carrying out the assignments independently, resolving most conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary, and interpreting policy on one initiative in terms of established objectives.
Duties
This position is located within surgery service at the Oscar G. Johnson VA medical center, Iron Mountain, MI.
The physician will provide direct patient care and work as a member of a healthcare team to oversee and coordinate the medical care for a population of surgical ICU patients.
As an independent practitioner, the incumbent is responsible for planning and carrying out the assignments independently, resolving most conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary, and interpreting policy on won initiative in terms of established objectives.
The employee keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potentially controversial matters.Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm
