Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg is the social practice artist who created

Remember on the National Mall to physically manifest the devastation of the pandemic.

She created the Empty Fix Project, a series of seven art installations to decrease the stigma of drug addiction and is currently working on projects to address political extremism.


Role Description:

The Curatorial Director will join the small team of consultants, partners, and volunteers to assist the artist in the development, execution, exhibition, and documenting of projects, including

  • Developing and executing exhibition opportunities for The Empty Fix Project and other artworks/installations. Possibly working with NIH and nonprofit organizations.
  • Overseeing archiving of the

In America:
Remember art, film, and artifacts. Working in conjunction with George Washington University, the Smithsonian and other archiving institutions on future accessibility of the art.

  • Documenting projects via image and video capture.
  • Working with vendors, fabricators, collaborators on upcoming art installations.
  • Assisting the artist in hosting a series of studiobased, community gatherings regarding the use of art for social change.
  • Create data systems to manifest order.
  • Work in a collaborative manner both within and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Utilize time management strategies to achieve efficiency.
  • Maintain flexibility in achieving organization's priorities.

Experience:


  • Bachelor's degree preferred with 13 years experience in the art world.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and/or a track record of coordinating multiple projects.

  • America Remembers Fund is a 501(c)3 whose mission is to support social practice art and to educate the community on the use of art for positive social change.
The fund was created by artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg to support her project,

In America:
Remember, the largest public participatory art installation on the National Mall since the AIDS quilt.

During the exhibition, visitors dedicated flags to loved ones who had died in the pandemic, resulting in an archive of almost 20,000 personalized flags.

The fund is supporting preservation efforts to archive the project and preserve these flags. Development work will begin soon to build this 501(c)3 to be a dominant support vehicle for social practice art.

  • Flash Sideways Studio, LLC is the incorporated art studio of Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, located at 4800 Auburn Avenue in Bethesda, Maryland. Additional art series and exhibitions are in various stages of conception/development. Intense visibility and growth have created a new role for a curatorial manager to work alongside the artist to drive these projects forward. Expansion of the role to full time is possible.
Compensation commensurate with experience.
