Perform under the clinical supervision of a supervisor assigned to the HCW by the MTF Director. The supervisor is responsible for the care rendered by the ATC.

The following levels of supervision apply:
Direct supervision. The supervisor is involved in the decision-making process. This level of supervision is for all ATCs during their initial 30-day evaluation period.

Direct supervision includes (1) Verbal, whereby the ATC shall contact the supervisor by direct conversation or telephone before the ATC implements or changes a regimen of care; and (2) Physically present whereby the supervisor is present through all or a significant portion of care.

Indirect supervision. The supervisor is not required to be involved in the decision-making process at the time decisions are made.

This supervision is primarily accomplished through retrospective review of records, evaluation of appropriateness of consultation and referral, and evaluation of events identified through occurrence screens.

Retrospective record reviews will assess the adequacy of the history and physical examination, appropriateness of tests, and planned course of treatments and interventions.

This type of supervision will be afforded the ATC following successful completion of a 30-day evaluation period and demonstrated knowledge and competency of required functional areas.

Actively consult with supervisor at the treatment facility and provide a full range of direct prevention, treatment and rehabilitation as ordered by the supervisor or other consultant providers.

Technically direct students from various programs and provide instruction in injury assessments and rehabilitation utilization of all indicated modalities, equipment, braces and treatment protocols.

Provide instruction and services in the area of applied anatomy, physiology of exercise, kinesiology and biomechanics.

Provide training and guidance, as necessary, to supporting employees assigned to the HCW by the supervisor during the performance of rehabilitative procedures.

Such direction and interaction shall adhere to government and professional clinical standards and accepted athletic trainer treatment protocols.

Ensure accuracy of all treatment documentation and direct reporting as assessments may be a factor in light duty or limited duty determinations where there is a question of physical ability or potential for injury.

Assist with inventory and maintenance of medical supplies. This includes replenishing exhausted supplies, preventive maintenance, and recommending new rehabilitation equipment purchases.
In cooperation with the supervisor, utilize the following public health model of managing injury risk to assist the MTF Director in ongoing efforts to design effective physical readiness programs:
Determine existence and size of injury problems.
    Identify causes of the problem.
    Determine problem prevention.
Recommend implementation of prevention strategies, training and programs.
Continue surveillance and monitor effectiveness of prevention efforts.
Document all assessments, treatments and follow-up care rendered through either written reports or computerized means on a daily basis.

Treatment and follow-up records on each individual requiring services shall document cause, contributing factors, duration, diagnosis and follow-up for use in research and analysis to improve treatment and develop methods for injury prevention.

Provide instruction and guidance as directed in courses relating to physical conditioning, injury prevention and recognition, pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation, stretching, exercise physiology, posture and body mechanics.

Provide consultation both to and from the medical providers within the Physical Therapy Clinic at NMC Portsmouth.

The Certified Athletic Trainer is responsible for a full range of direct treatment and rehabilitation as ordered by the provider.

Perform administrative duties, which include maintaining statistical records of clinical workload, participating in education programs and medical research, preparing documentation for medical boards, and participation in clinical staff quality assurance functions as prescribed by the MTF Director and clinical administrative functions (vital signs, appointments, check in/out, etc.).

Document all assessments, treatments and follow-up care rendered through either written reports or through computerized means on a daily basis.

Treatment and follow-up records on each individual requiring service shall document cause, contributing factors, duration, diagnosis and follow-up for use in research and analysis to improve treatment and develop methods for injury prevention.

Maintain documentation of all treatment provided in accordance with clinic directives and prepare such records and reports as may be required.

All records and reports must be legible. Abbreviations must be only those listed in local instructions. All evaluations must be reviewed by independent licensed provider (counter signed).

Verify the content and correctness of all prepared and transcribed reports within two (2) working days by affixing an original signature to all copies of the document and validating its content or by computer input as appropriate.

Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation personnel will also perform clerical and scheduling duties in support of patient care and clinic operations and other related administrative duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Bachelor's degree in athletic training.

Possess experience of at least one (1) year within the preceding three (3) years as an athletic trainer with collegiate athletes, professional athletes, or military operations personnel.

Possess experience with computerized injury tracking programs of at least one (1) year within the preceding three (3) years. Provide two letters of recommendation written within the preceding two (2) years attesting to the HCWs fitness ability.
