REPORTS TO:
Assistant Director of Nursing

***: The Charge Nurse is responsible for the oversight of all nursing activities within a POD/ Clinical Team. Oversees all the nursing areas, ensures efficient clinical patient flow, does daily nursing assignment, nurse visits, triages, patient care, patient issues, and staff issues. The Charge Nurse works in concert with the POD leader for optimum performance and patient care. This is a supervisory position with oversight of all nurse positions within their POD/ departments.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current state licensure to practice in Massachusetts.
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certified.
  • Maintains licensure and certifications.
  • A minimum of five years of nursing experience.

  • Nursing principles including disease processes, certain examinations, observations, laboratory studies and appropriately applies these principles to patient care.
  • Nurse Practice Act/Code of Ethics.
  • Nursing process.
  • Managed Care.
  • OSHA guidelines.
  • Infection control standards
  • Emergency Procedures.
  • Moderate computer skills.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Maintains a professional environment in a multiprovider, multidiscipline organization.
  • Maintains a patient centered environment including but not limited to:
  • Provision of care and advocate for patients of all ages and their families based on prudent nursing judgment and acceptable standards of practice.
  • Efficient patient flow, assisting providers, supervision and direction of nursing staff.
  • Performs tasks and procedures within the scope of a nurse and legal guidelines of the nurse practice act. Adheres to Board of Nursing regulations.
  • Is budget conscious and maintains continual effectiveness without compromise.
  • Perform nursing tasks in all clinical areas.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBLE FOR:


  • Daily tasks in the nursing department.
  • Sets clear, specific expectations up front.
  • Direct leadership of nurses, Medical Assistants, Phlebotomists, and clinical secretaries, students and volunteers.
  • Identifies resources needed for projects.
  • Balances workload of staff.
  • Identifies strengths and weaknesses of each staff member.
  • Problem solves by foreseeing problems and proactively working to address them.
  • Fosters corporation among team members.
  • Participates in orientation of new staff, students, and volunteers.
  • Participation in nursing staff education and training.
  • Participation in any nursing staff disciplinary action.
  • Maintaining adequate staffing in conjunction with the budget.
  • Assigning and reassigns tasks to the nursing staff on a daily basis and as necessary.
  • Is responsible for being on duty as the licensed coverage in the event that other licensed staff is not available.
  • Interacts with drug representatives.
  • Oversees flow of patients into clinical area, reassigning staff and rooms as needed.
  • Responsible for annual staff evaluations.
  • Oversees clinical tracking.
  • Ordering medical supplies.
  • Assign/ designate "Charge Nurse" in your absence

Tasks - including but not limited to:

  • Patient preparation for visit.
  • Appropriately prepare patient for either a complete physical, sick visit, follow up visit; or a gynecological exam.
  • Vital Signs: blood pressure, temperature, pulse (all points), orthostatic blood pressure and pulse.
  • Obtain interpretation when needed.
  • Chart documentation.
  • Measurements: Height, Weight, and (other measurements as needed).
  • Documentation of reason for visit, medication review, allergy review.
