    BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
    This person will work in the research laboratory of Dr.

    Maria Spies on the structural (CryoEM and X-ray crystallography) studies of the molecular machines maintaining human genome stability, and on structure-based drug discovery.

    This person will be responsible for the generation and interpretation of experimental data, presentation of the data at scientific meetings, drafting the scientific manuscripts describing the data and assisting in the daily operations of the laboratory.

    This person will be also encouraged to apply for extramural and/or intramural funding.


    CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Purification of DNA repair proteins RAD51, RAD52, RDM1, RPAs, PARP1, DNA helicases, etc. for structural and biophysical analysis, and for small molecule drug discovery.
    • Analysis of the nucleoprotein complexes by CryoEM and X-ray crystallography (sample and greed preparation, screen, data collection and data analysis).
    • Writing proposals for time on the CryoEM instruments at national facilities.
    • Teaching junior lab members in using biochemical and structural techniques.
    • Perform library research on topics studied, prepare research materials for reports, and assist in the preparation of papers for publication.
    • Present the data at regional, national and/or international meetings.
    • Order general laboratory supplies, maintain equipment, and sustain laboratory organization.
    • Analyze and interpret data with the help of others in the laboratory, and determine the validity of the results. Keep detailed laboratory notebooks recording experimental data and analyses and present these findings at weekly lab meetings. Recommend further experiments and/or changes in procedures.
    • Other duties as assigned.

    Functional supervision is received from the Principal Investigator.

    BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
    PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, structural biology, or related scientific discipline. Prior postdoctoral experience. Strong publication record. Expertise in CryoEM, X-ray crystallography and biochemical analysis of protein-DNA interactions, fluorescence spectroscopy, and HTS. Experience in purifying and working with human DNA repair proteins. Proficiency with Linux and PC.


    EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    • Structural and biochemical analysis of protein-DNA interactions
    • CryoEM sample preparation, data collection and model building
    • Experience in purifying and working with human DNA repair proteins.
    • Proficiency in computer use (Windows and Office applications, GraphPad Prism, contemporary CryoEM and X-ray crystallography software).
    • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

    • Strong organizational skills
    • Knowledge of the fundamental mechanisms of homologous recombination, DNA repair, DNA replication, genome stability
    • Experience with bacterial and mammalian cell culture
