The Town of Suffield is seeking a Recreation Sports Programmer for the Parks and Recreation Department. This position is responsible for recreation work involving organizing and implementing recreational activities in public parks and other facilities.

Work involves planning, supervising, and coordinating varied recreational programs for all age groups designed to meet the community's recreational needs.

Serves the residents of Suffield in a customer-oriented manner that promotes a positive, professional image for the Town government.


Compensation and Benefits:

The pay rate is $29.41 per hour; compensation is in accordance with the Town Hall Collective Bargaining Agreement.

This position is union-represented and is eligible for medical, dental, vision, health savings account, employer-paid life, short and long-term disability insurance, 457 defined contribution plan, paid holiday, sick personal, and vacation time.


Supervision Received:

Works under the general direction of the Director of Community Services.


Supervision Exercised:

None.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Participates in the planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and directing of diversified, comprehensive recreational programs on a year-round basis, including seasonal programs, special events, and trips—occasional program instruction when needed.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises and evaluates seasonal, part-time staff and program instructors.
  • Makes routine technical recreational program decisions. Maintains contacts with community organizations along with the Director of Special Programs
  • Promotes recreational programs and writes press releases and flyers.
  • Assists with program registrations, collection of fees, and other office functions to ensure maximum service to the public.
  • Maintains time sheets and other records; prepares activity and accident reports. Prepares statistical reports on programs.
  • Assists in preparing the annual operating budget for assigned recreation programs; plans and directs necessary purchase of supplies and equipment.
  • Contacts organizations to elicit support for ongoing activities. Conducts meetings with staff and volunteers. Attends meetings and conferences for professional development.
  • Coordinates the availability of sports fields and facilities for department programs.
  • Assists the Director with coordinating the daily operations of the (maintenance staff.) Assists in conducting inspections of fields and facilities.
  • Secures annual bids for sports programs.
  • Fills in when program supervisors and instructors are unavailable.
  • Acts as the department liaison to non-departmental sports organizations.
  • Coordinates the department's "Sports Council" and administers all aspects of the committee.
  • Works collaboratively with department staff and partners to create and implement new and innovative outdoor programming throughout the Town of Suffield, its trails, parks, and facilities.
  • Maintains positive working relationships with school officials, community groups, and the public regarding program offerings and coordination of services; Responds promptly and cordially to citizen inquiries, feedback, and complaints about services or facilities.
  • Provides excellent customer service and maintains strong working relationships with commissioners, coworkers, contractors, staff, and the community.

Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience:


  • Bachelor's Degree from a recognized college or university in Recreation or Sports Management.
2. (2) Two years of progressively responsible recreation program experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.


  • Suitable experience may be substituted for education attainment if deemed appropriate by the First Selectman.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public recreation programs.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods and techniques of recreation/sports program administration.
  • Considerable ability to work with large or small groups to instruct and functionally supervise others.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time efficiently, and devise solutions to immediate problems without much time for consideration.
  • Considerable ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
