CARECEN DC is seeking a qualified English Citizenship Class Instructor to join our team.

The Citizenship Class Instructor will be responsible for teaching high beginning to intermediate level English speakers as a second language students and facilitating classes designed to prepare adult immigrants for the citizenship exam and interview process.

This position requires a passionate educator with a strong background in education, particularly in areas relevant to teaching English language skills and social studies.


Responsibilities:

Plan and deliver engaging and informative lessons to adult immigrants preparing for the citizenship exam.

  • Develop curriculum materials, lesson plans, and supplementary resources in alignment with program objectives.
  • Provide individualized instruction and support to meet the diverse needs of adult learners.
  • Create a supportive and inclusive classroom environment conducive to learning and skill development.
  • Assess student progress through formative and summative evaluations, and provide constructive feedback.
  • Collaborate with program staff and stakeholders to support the overall success of the citizenship education program.
  • Stay informed about changes to citizenship requirements and exam content, and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.

Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments, and student progress.

Qualifications:


  • A bachelor's degree in education (K12, Social Studies, English Language Arts, History, Linguistics, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), or Adult Education).
  • Alternatively, at least one year of experience as the lead teacher in a class for adult immigrants.

Preferred qualifications include:


  • A degree in TESOL;
    OR TESOL certification from a state licensing agency;
    OR A minimum of two years of experience in TESOL instruction in a classroom setting for an adult education program that utilizes a textbook and a structured curriculum.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
  • Sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic needs of adult immigrant learners.
  • Proficiency in languages commonly spoken by immigrant communities in Washington, D.C., is an asset.
