Duties:


  • Perform a wide variety of clinical laboratory test procedures within the Microbiology section in the Department of Pathology and Area Laboratory Services (DPALS), a College of American Pathology (CAP) accredited full service laboratory.
  • Perform microbiology tests and examinations using both automated and manual techniques and involving the operation of machines, instruments and equipment common to the microbiology specialization.
  • Receive specimens from Specimen Processing, clinics, wards, Troop Medical Clinics (TMCs), and other DOD facilities.
  • Operation of instruments and equipment used in performing tests and examinations involve function verification checks, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and making fine and delicate adjustments when controls exceed defined tolerance limits.
  • Monitor inventory of consumable supplies, reagents and controls, allowing sufficient lead time to obtain additional supplies prior to exhausting stock.
  • Assist in training newly assigned civilian and military laboratory personnel in the performance of microbiology tasks and the related quality assurance, instrument maintenance and implications of various results.
  • Accept referrals of abnormal or unusual results or procedural observations from lower grade personnel.

  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • A preplacement medical examination is required.
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 40 pounds is required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing testing procedures in a clinical laboratory; calibrating or maintaining clinical laboratory instruments; and documenting results through clinical laboratory automated systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education:

One full year (18 semester hours) of progressively higher level graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position such as Medical Lab Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, or Microbiology

Combination of Education and Experience:

A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages
