JOB PURPOSE The British International School in Washington is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Science Lab Technician to join our dynamic educational team. The Science Lab Technician will play a crucial role in supporting our science curriculum by ensuring the smooth operation of our laboratory facilities and assisting teachers in preparing materials, experiments and demonstrations. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of our students in the field of science education


REPORTING TO The British International School, Washington


PERSONAL SPECIFICATIONS - SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Lab Setup and Maintenance

  • Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, materials, and supplies for science experiments and practical demonstrations.
  • Ensure that lab facilities are clean, organized, and wellmaintained, adhering to safety standards and protocols.
  • Inventory management of chemicals, equipment, and supplies, coordinating orders and restocking as needed.

Experiment Support

  • Assist science teachers in preparing and conducting experiments and demonstrations for various grade levels.
  • Provide guidance to students on proper laboratory techniques, safety procedures, and the correct use of equipment.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with equipment and ensure their timely repair or replacement.

Safety and Compliance

  • Maintain a strong focus on laboratory safety, ensuring that safety guidelines and protocols are followed at all times.
  • Properly dispose of hazardous waste materials and ensure the safe storage of chemicals and materials.
  • Collaborate with teachers and school administration to develop and update safety procedures.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with science department teachers to understand their curriculum needs and provide assistance in aligning experiments with learning objectives.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop new experiments and practical activities that enhance students' understanding of scientific concepts.

Professional Development

  • Stay uptodate with advancements in laboratory techniques, equipment, and educational practices.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to continuously improve skills and knowledge relevant to the role.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant coursework in a scientific field (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Physics, etc.).
  • Previous experience working in a science laboratory or educational setting is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety procedures and best practices.
  • Proficiency in using laboratory equipment, software, and tools.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, especially in a collaborative team environment.
  • Problemsolving abilities and adaptability in a fastpaced educational setting.
  • Ability to engage positively with students and teachers, fostering a supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently with mínimal supervision.
  • Hold a current Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure or equivalent for countries lived in or must pass a Criminal Background Check
  • Compliance with visa requirements for working in the USA.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all pupils. And the willingness to undertake appropriate child protection training when required.
