Our Mission:

Since the 1893 World Columbian Exposition, our organization has aimed to connect people to the natural environment and human history.

The Field Museum is searching for a Collections Technician to assist with grant-funded digitization of land snail specimens. Data are managed on an Axiell EMu platform.

Ongoing efforts are focusing on the digitization of specimen data and images, geo-referencing, and the assorted mobilization of data to national and global aggregators such as IDigBio and GBIF.


The Collection Technician will verify and transcribe label data associated with specimens in our molluscan collection, with a focus on our Pacific collection.

The Collection Technician will be supervised by our collections and grant staff and is responsible for duties that are part of the grant-funded "Pacific Island Land Snail Biodiversity [PILSBRy]" project.

This is a term-limited position with work to be conducted fully on-site in the Museum's invertebrate collection range.


Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Pulling and reshelving grantrelated material as needed
  • Handling scientific specimens and labels
  • Transcribing label data associated with specimens in the museum database
  • Reviewing and updating taxonomic names
  • Verifying geographic collection information
  • Assessing and recording specimen conditions following the provided guidelines

Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree (preferably in biology with coursework in zoology, systematics, or related fields)
  • Experience working in natural history collections
  • Knowledge of taxonomic principles
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience with handling museum specimens
  • Familiarity with collection databases (preferably EMu) and digitization workflows
