    Description
    Duties * Manage fire prevention programs to improve and maintain fire safety conditions.

    * Act as representative of the Fire Chief in making command fire inspections and single purpose inspections of fire prevention equipment and practices.

    * Establish policies, plans, and procedures for fire prevention, fire-fighting, and hazardous materials handling. * Investigate fire and prepares reports related to cause, monetary value, damage and salvage/overhaul operations.

    * Develop training materials and disseminates information on new methods and advanced techniques in fire prevention, protection and elimination of fire hazards.

    * Conduct advanced training sessions for departmental personnel. * Perform technical review of specifications and blueprints for compliance of building construction and requirements for fire protection systems. * Conduct studies and investigations of problems presented and research manuals, regulations and safety publications to develop solutions. * Set priorities and plans work to be accomplished by subordinate personnel. * Evaluate performance of subordinate personnel.

    Requirements Conditions of Employment * Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

    * This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.

    * This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

    * The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.

    Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.

    * This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

    * This position has been designated Mission Essential.

    In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

    * This position requires the employee to wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.

    * This position requires employee to work 60 hours per week (120 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24 hour shift and may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.

    * Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

    * The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S.

    states or possessions to operate vehicles. * This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test. * This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program. * The incumbent is required to obtain and then continue to maintain a Secret security clearance. * The position requires the employee to obtain and maintain a government driver's license within 90 days of employment. * Required firefighter certifications are listed in Required Documents section below.

    You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Specialized Experience:

    One year of specialized experience which includes leading members of a firefighting crew; leading responses to Hazardous Material (HAZMAT), structural, and fire emergencies; or assisting in developing or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

    This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

    For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    To qualify for the GS-11 level:

    Specialized Experience:

    One year of specialized experience which includes supervising members of a firefighting crew; acting as incident commander at hazardous materials incidents, structural and fire emergencies; inspecting fire protection systems, fire detection systems, and fire safety equipment to ensure proper operation; coordinating with internal and external agencies on emergency calls; or developing or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

    This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

    For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess the certifications as outlined in the Additional Information for the appropriate level you are applying and Required Documents sections below in accordance with DoD M.

    Grade Requirement:

    To qualify for the GS-10 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

    To qualify for the GS-11 level: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-10).
