Reporting to the Director of Financial Operations, we are seeking a
_Financial Manager_ who will be responsible for providing oversight of the day-to-day financial and accounting operations for the School of Nursing.

In collaboration with school leadership, the Financial Manager will develop financial planning & cost analyses, interpret & review financial data to evaluate and determine financial performance, and assist with overall business decisions.

This position will have a heavy emphasis on financial modeling, financial analysis, financial planning, and budgeting.


The Financial Manager will train and supervise a Budget Analyst and assume responsibility of reviewing and approving many financial processes and transactions.

This position will be the lead role for special ad hoc financial projects, an important element of the internal control environment, a key liaison with internal auditors and departments both within and outside of the SON and will be required to fulfill the duties and authority of the Director of Financial Operations in the Director's absence.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Closely supports the Director of Financial Operations in formulation of SON's annual budget & fiveyear plan and quarterly projections to the Office of Planning and Budget. Enters data into complex budgeting systems and templates.
  • Prepares and distributes the monthly and quarterly financial reporting package to major SON business areas, and highlevel GAAP financial statements to the Associate Dean, Finance and Administration.
  • Manages the quarterly and yearend fiscal closing process.
  • Maintains compliance with JHU's GAAP accounting, cash accounting, fund balance accounting, gift accounting, endowment accounting, and sponsored accounting policies.
  • Works with the Associate Dean, Finance and Administration and Director of Financial Operations on both short and longterm strategic financial planning and analysis activities including providing key information for the fiveyear financial plans and developing forecast and financial projections based on financial strategy and resources that realistically reflect the School of Nursing's risks and opportunities.
  • Reviews and approves financial processes and transactions including the processing of invoices, check requests, Concur travel reimbursements, online forms for independent contractors, nonSIS invoicing and collection, P-Cards, central bill travel cards, accruals and deferrals, eforms, nonpayroll cost transfers, review and reconciliation of financial activity, SAP account maintenance, etc.
  • Reviews and approves monthly accounts reconciliations, corrects errors, and informs the Director of Financial Operations of any problems or discrepancies.
  • Manages SON's chart of accounts, setting up new accounts and closing existing accounts in accordance JHU accounting guidelines.
  • Works with SON Sponsored Research Finance Team to maintain the strength of uniform practices and procedures, and to ensure that faculty effort is tracked, recorded, and reported accurately.
  • Writes standard operating procedures and develops training materials related to finance and accounting policies for SON and deliver training to SON faculty and staff.
  • Manage one direct report: Budget Analyst position.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of general accounting principles and practices with an emphasis on university financial accounting.
  • Significant experience in spreadsheet development and analysis, and the ability to manipulate large data sets using pivot tables, vlookups, and other tools.
  • Demonstrated outstanding analytical skills that allow for interpretation of budgetary, financial and related organizational performance or management information.
  • Demonstrated skills in quantitative financial and budget analyses, including the development of financial models used to forecast financial results under different scenarios.
  • Advanced technical experience in the use of financial software to develop and maintain financial models and automated financial reports.
  • Demonstrated skills in formulating and implementing financial policies and standards to ensure accountability and compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Excellent customer service, oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have ability to build strong relationships with people at all levels of the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field.
  • Five years related financial/accounting and financial management experience, e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling the monetary resources of a department, center, or unit.
