Description
SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the President/designee, the Director of University Athletics, is responsible for the oversight of assigned intercollegiate sports teams, coaches, sports administrative and compliance programs/staff, and department initiatives.
This position works with department and campus administrative staff on all matters regarding the athletic programs and ensures programs are compliant with department, university, conference, and national operational and financial guidelines.
The position is a 12-month full-time administrative appointment.DUTIES &
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Planning, directing, and facilitating the intercollegiate competitive sports program and ensuring compliance with Conference and NAIA rules and regulations
Assists coaches with instructing student-athletes on the rules, regulations, and techniques of the sport and university-and evaluates student-athlete skills, academic progress, and behavior toward faculty, players, officials, and spectators
Serves as the chief spokesperson and advocate for all coaches and programs
Responsible for recruiting quality coaches, leading the search process for vacancies, and making recommendations for hire to senior-level administration
Represents the university at the local, State, regional, and national levels at meetings and conferences for all athletic matters
Responsible for developing policies and departmental procedures for the Department of Athletics
Responsible for Team Compliance-working with coaches and student-athletes to achieve this goal
Responsible for departmental budget construction and management, adhering to university procurement practices, policies, and procedures; and, ensuring accountability for all staff and programs regarding the same
Complete the university requisition process for all needed departmental expenditures
Maintain a positive relationship with university athletic donors and community constituencies for the betterment of the athletic department
Work closely with the President/designee on friend-raising and fundraising opportunities to advance university athletics
Assists where needed with student-athlete recruitment
Assists where needed with coaching responsibilities, if necessary
Ensure coaches work with University Student Support Services to advance the academic profile of student-athletes
Ensure compliance and secure personnel for athletic training for university athletics
Responsible for the overall safety and well-being of university student-athletes and visiting student-athletes
Some travel is expected with athletic programs for competition
Maintains equipment inventory and distributes equipment, supplies, and uniforms to student-athletes.
Monitors the approval of departmental requests and alignment to protocols for travel and expenditures
Book travel, lodging, and meals for all athletic programs
Must be willing to work and travel nights and weekends
Other duties as assigned by the University President/designee
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters Degree in Sports Administration, Business Administration, Health Physical Education and Recreation or a related field
Documented experience working with athletic administration at a Church affiliated 4-year Historically Black College or University
Must possess a deepened knowledge base of athletic compliance
Ability to make difficult decisions in adverse situations for the betterment/integrity of the department and university
Must possess a disposition of approachability, professionalism, and astuteness
Must possess and continue to demonstrate high moral character and integrity
Documented experience working with external entities to ensure seamless athletic departmental logistics
Ability to friend-raise and fundraise for all athletic programs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail
Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
