  • Have you always been interested in working with animals, but don't have the experience? SGVHS is looking to expand our team and include staff that want to learn kennel work and shelter work _
Kennel Attendants are responsible for the overall care of all the animals within the shelter.

Under the direction of the Kennel Manager, Kennel Attendants provide for the continual cleaning of cages, runs, outside yards and Meet and Greet areas as well as the proper feeding and care of all shelter animals.

Responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter. Conduct potential adoption "Meet and Greets". All Animal Care Attendants are expected to exhibit a positive and professional attitude at all times.


Essential Functions include but are not limited to the following duties:

  • Thoroughly clean and disinfect all areas of the shelter as often as necessary and maintain sanitary conditions of kennels, cages, play yards, equipment, and general facility.
  • Feed and provide water to shelter animals; select and prepare appropriate type and quantity of food.
  • Observe animal appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.
  • Report signs of illness, disease, injury, unusual conditions or abnormal behavior of any shelter animal to immediately to shelter clinic personnel.
  • Take charge and/or handle animals as required and restrain hard to control animals.
  • Walk dogs several times a day to provide exercise and time for elimination of bowels and bladder.
  • Socialize animals according to established protocols; work with and train dogs and cats to gain basic skills to enhance adoption.
  • Bath, groom, and prepare animals available for adoption.
  • Conduct "meet & greet" visits and observe pet/adopter interaction.
  • Provide guidance to public on animal care.
  • Release animals to their owners as directed by Customer Care Personnel or a shelter Manager.
  • Ensure visitors are assisted properly and appropriate service response times are achieved.
  • Observes sick, exotic, quarantined, and potentiallyinjured animals and records their condition.
  • Maintain records related to animal inventory, daily animal care and conditions in shelter management database.
  • Assist veterinarian, registered veterinary technician, and veterinary assistants in preparing, restraining, medicating and vaccinating animals or in performing euthanasia.
  • Assist with the day to day chores of the shelter. This may include but is not limited to unpacking and stocking of shelter supplies, laundry, dishes, taking out trash, etc.
  • Assist in the office by answering telephones, responding to inquiries from the public regarding care, retention, and disposal of animals; may collect fees and issue receipts.
  • Conducts routine maintenance and minor repairs of facilities and equipment at shelter.
  • Inform Animal Care, Customer Care and/or Clinic Manager as appropriate of the need to order any kennel supplies in order to ensure that all kennel supplies are in stock at all times.
  • Maintain a "team work" ethic among all staff and volunteers and stress courtesy, respect and integrity at all times.
  • Notify the Customer Care Manager of any facilities maintenance needs.
  • Assist in the identification of potential "goodwill" shelter stories and provide such information to the Customer Care Manager.

Skills and Knowledge:


  • Have ability to gain animal confidence when restraining them for transport, grooming and/or treatment.
  • Housekeeping and laundry duties for all areas.
  • Ability to restrain for procedures performed by technicians or doctors.
  • Knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, assessment of change in animal status.

Physical Demands:


  • Continuously required to stand, walk, squat, stoop, and bend for long periods.
  • Continuously required to talk and hear
  • Often requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequently requires handling of materials up to 20 lbs.
  • Additionally, handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.
  • May be required to use strength or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active animals.
  • Continuously required to utilize both hands and finger dexterity
  • Occasionally required to safely intervene in the event of a dog fight and break up

Working Conditions:


  • Work is normally performed inside; some outside work is required.
  • Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the environment is moderate to occasionally loud.
  • Exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes.
  • Possible exposure to contagious diseases.

Knowledge of:


  • Cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
  • Proper methods of animal restraint.
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment.
