    Job Overview

    The Director of Development, International serves as a lead fundraiser and market leader, planning and implementing a regionally focused strategy for Georgetown's principal, major, planned, and leadership gift prospects. This role's individual portfolio and strategy work will preferably be focused on the Middle East including North Africa (MENA region), and Greece but could grow to include other important international markets to the University. They will be joining Georgetown during an especially exciting and invigorating time as we continue our most ambitious capital campaign Called to Be with a goal of raising $3 billion by 2026.

    The Director serves as the market leader for all advancement activity in these key designated regions, with a focus on development, for Georgetown's current campaign, and overall, for the university's external presence. The Director also serves as a front-line development officer and coordinates the overall advancement strategy for the primary assigned region(s), to include representation and advancement of all of Georgetown's schools and campuses. In partnership with the Assistant Vice President of University Development, they serve as a thought partner on Georgetown's overall international development strategy and growth.

    Ultimately, the Director executes gift strategies as a fundraiser and oversees a region by driving and executing advancement strategies, drawing upon all areas and talent within the advancement organization. They identify, cultivate, and solicit or arrange for the solicitation of gifts from individuals, their personal foundations, select corporations, and select foundations. As well, they are responsible for coordinating advancement strategies for a portfolio of leadership gift prospects, many of whom have multiple philanthropic interests at Georgetown; with some donors, that requires playing the lead relationship role - and with other donors, that requires coordinating behind the scenes among academic leadership, development officers, and volunteers. The Director of Development communicates with all interested parties and effectively leads the efforts of other regional gift officers and volunteers.

    The Director also serves as a market leader and oversees stewardship, particularly for major gift prospects with multiple interests - with responsibility for independently growing and managing a portfolio of approximately prospects comprised of top-tier major gift donors and prospects with giving abilities of $100,000 and above. Additionally, they have a goal of personal solicitation visits per year to promote and sustain Georgetown's presence in the MENA region and University Campaign priorities to secure the gifts for Georgetown University; and are responsible for meeting key metrics throughout the year to measure their performance, including an agreed-upon number of current and prospective donor visits, proposals/asks, and dollars raised. Moving prospects through the complete giving cycle - qualification, cultivation, solicitation, gift negotiation, and stewardship, they are tasked to raise $500,000-2M annually in new gift commitments as the portfolio matures and with growth opportunities in goals to be established with the Senior Director of Development, International.

    The primary duties for the Director of Development include:
    • Identify, cultivate, and solicit, or arrange for the solicitation of philanthropic donations to Georgetown University
    • Develop and execute overall strategy for development initiatives within assigned regions
    • Provide primary and secondary staff support to University Principals' fundraising in Europe ensuring effective deployment of Principals to each key market in Europe


    Work Interactions

    Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, International, the Director of Development, International works in collaboration with the entire International Development team and other unit development colleagues. They function as air traffic control for all events, activities, and deployments in the MENA region.

    Georgetown University unit teams generally lead their dean's deployments, but this Senior Director often staffs the dean, offers strategic support, ensures that multiple deployments and events are not taking place at the same time, shares market expertise with unit-based DOs, and helps to ensure a consistent and comprehensive strategy is in place for the region. Collegiality and a spirit of collaboration and partnership are imperative for Director to be successful.

    Requirements and Qualifications
    • Bachelor's degree
    • At least 5 to 7 years of major gift fundraising experience that includes campaign planning and execution or equivalent relevant work experience - preference for fundraising experience in higher education
    • A demonstrated track record of success in meeting major gift and campaign goals or the equivalent experience
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • The ability to work with a diverse range of constituents, including donors, board members, and volunteers as well as alumni, parents, friends, faculty, administrators, and internal colleagues
    • Understanding and experience working with international cultures
    • A high energy level and flexible nature
    • Strong experience with MS Office Suite
    • Understanding of prospect management systems, donor databases, and prospect pipeline development
    • Strong work ethic, good judgment, ability to manage own time and collaborate effectively with others
    • Ability to gain credibility and demonstrate integrity as a development officer with constituents
    • Desire to contribute to and participate in the mission of Georgetown University


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Multilingual ability - preferably in Arabic
    • Expertise in Middle Eastern culture and norms
    • Significant time spent living or working in the Middle East
    • Working knowledge of inter-connected Middle Eastern families
