MAJOR FUNCTION


The Cloud Engineer works with Infrastructure and Application Development teams to assess, develop, and administer cloud-based systems to meet enterprise requirements.

The central responsibility as a Cloud Engineer will be to provide the enterprise with best practices in cloud computing and manage the planning, implementation, and administration of our cloud presence.

In addition, the Cloud Engineer must possess the ability to estimate, budget, and monitor usage of cloud resources.


ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

  • Project Management: Responsible for managing projects from analysis through implementation for the Polk County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC). Completes accurate development and project duration estimates. Recommends staff assignments and schedules as well as tracks project progress to ensure timely completion.
  • Other: Travel for education, conference, and site visits is required. Attends education courses as required.
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

  • Works with our engineering team to assess, identify, and implement optimal cloudbased solutions.
  • Manages cloud environments, deployments, containers, and tools.
  • Maintains code, performs code reviews, and manages CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to lead a small team of developers, assigning, and monitoring project tasks.
  • Trains clients in the use of cloud solutions.
  • Knowledge and experience using modern web and cloud development tools and platforms.
  • Development experience in software engineering, including concepts like objectoriented programming, design patterns, functional programming, asynchronous programming, closures, types, and ES
  • Experienced in fullstack development.
  • Proficient with modern frontend frameworks.
  • Experienced in SQL.
  • Experienced with Git and GitHub.
  • Knowledgeable in implementing and interfacing with REST or GraphQL APIs.
  • Orchestrates and automates cloudbased platforms throughout the organization.
  • Experienced in cloud architecture and management.
  • Experienced with automating unit and endtoend testing.
  • Experience working with a small team on projects, shipping those projects to users, and iterating based on feedback.
  • Identifying and implementing best practices for the development team.
  • Stays current with industry trends, making recommendations as needed to help the organization innovate and excel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an accredited four (4) year college/university with a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience in Computer Science or Engineering.
  • 35+ years of experience in developing software using languages and frameworks such as JavaScript, TypeScript, React, , , C#, PHP, Laravel, or Python.
  • 35+ years of experience in a software engineer role or related position.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms, preferably DigitalOcean or Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
  • Experience working with Linux/UNIX and Docker.
  • Knowledge of web services, API, REST, and RPC.
  • Strong awareness of networking and internet protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, SMTP, HTTP, and distributed networks.
  • Database experience, including knowledge of SQL and NoSQL.
  • Experience with opensource technology, software development, and system engineering.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to stay focused on completing tasks and meeting goals.
  • Interest in Cloud Engineering and its impact on greater business practices.
  • Skilled at working with a team, or alone as required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to secure a valid Florida driver's license at the time of employment within this classification.
