Description

The Overnight Program Monitor works under the supervision of the Program Director and Assistant Director to assist in providing overnight coverage for the Pre-College Program participants.

The Overnight Program Monitors work specifically in the dorm between 11 pm and 7 am to monitor and supervise the youth, handle any unexpected emergencies or conflicts, and ensure the safety and compliance of all program participants and staff.

This is an overnight awake position for two individuals with a one hour relief break included each night.


The VISIONS Pre-College Program was developed specifically to meet the needs of participants who are blind who are considering attending college after they graduate high school.

The program addresses the educational, social, recreational, mobility and residential aspects of the college experience.

The program is also designed to assist in making a determination as to the readiness and potential success of the participants as college enrollees.

The participants take an Intro to College Life course, as well as a distance learning writing course. Workshops related to college life and weekend excursions are offered to build social skills.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Monitor and supervise participants during the overnight hours (11 pm to 7 am) in the dorm.
  • Patrol dorm floor, paying close attention to dorm exits. Floor sweeps should be performed periodically throughout the night.
  • As needed, provide support to participants who may encounter any issues, conflicts or emergencies overnight.
  • Help ensure that safety policies and procedures are followed. Assess any overnight incidents by level of severity (Level 1, 2 or 3).
  • Any level 3 incidents should be reported immediately to the Program Director or Assistant Director (an on-duty schedule for each night will be provided).
  • Maintain a log of participant incidents which will be reviewed by the Program Director or Assistant Director on a daily basis.
  • Conduct suite check at 12:00 AM to ensure all students are in their assigned rooms.
  • Ensure that 7 AM on-duty staff are awake to assist participants with morning routines, a daily schedule will be provided.
  • When needed, assist participants with getting ready for morning activities and departures.
  • Monitor kitchen use before midnight to ensure that appliances are unplugged and participants clean up the space they use.
  • Treat everyone with appropriate dignity and respect. Encourage respect, sensitivity and understanding for individuals and their differences.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current college student or recent graduate. Majoring in the human services field a plus, but not required.
  • 21 years of age or older
  • Desire and ability to work with teens who are blind or visually impaired
  • Willingness to work extended hours in a residential setting for four weeks (July
  • August 3, including staff training on July 7th).
  • Ability to accept guidance and supervision
  • Must be organized, selfstarting, assertive, resourceful and goaloriented.
The salary for this role is $21 per hour for the period of July - August 2, 2023.

This position is located at VISIONS Pre-College Program at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY.

incorporated in 1926. VISIONS provides service for blind and visually impaired people of all ages in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area.
