    Position Summary

    Activity Specialists serve in a specific program area to further the mission of the camp through the development and delivery of program areas at camp that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the camper's age and abilities. They provide management to the physical operation of program facilities and equipment. Depending on specialty, additional training would be provided onsite. Camp Lakota is a Girl Scout overnight camp that serves girls in grades 2-12. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities
    • Develop and deliver an activity program that is appropriate for the age and ability of the campers.
      • Write lesson plans that meet camp outcomes and the abilities of the campers.
      • Evaluate abilities of campers and staff.
      • Design and deliver progressive and varied activities that uses resources efficiently.
      • Expand the camp's activities with new ideas and initiatives.
      • Develop and utilize new teaching, processing, and debriefing tools.
      • Evaluate the success of the activity.
    • Ensure that camp staff and campers know and follow safety and educational procedures.
      • Assist in the implementation of staff training for specific activity area.
      • Train other staff in their responsibilities during activities.
      • Ensure campers and staff follow safety procedures.
      • Assist counselors with the development of activity kits for use by units and for special events.
    • Assist in the management and care of the physical facilities and equipment in activity area.
      • Maintain and clean activity equipment and activity area, keeping it free of hazards and debris.
      • Ensure that equipment and supplies are secure.
      • Conduct a daily check of the area and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
    • Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
      • Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
      • Set a good example to campers and others regarding general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
      • Attend and prepare for daily meetings.
      • Assist where needed on camper arrival and departure days.
      • Be a village liaison, providing check in/out support, conduct daily visits to villages and provide outstanding customer service to families.
    • Other duties as assigned.
    GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

    The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications (Minimum Education and Experience)
    • Must be 18 years of age or older.
    • Completion of high school or equivalent. Some college/university preferred.
    • Ability to interact with all age levels.
    • Documented experience in teaching and facilitating activities to children relating to area of specialty.
    • Must be able to obtain or become certified in First Aid/CPR prior to first day of work.
    • Must submit health history form prior to first day of work.
    • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend pre-camp trainings.
    • Ability to live onsite acting as an on-duty supervisor for the duration of the camp season.
    Specific Qualifications: (Based on Specialty)
    • Equestrian Specialist: Current certification in horseback riding or equivalent. Mounting and dismounting campers and/or yourself on a 16.2 hand horse with no assistance.
    • Challenge Course Specialist: Prior experience facilitating a high and low ropes challenge course program preferred. Must complete and pass onsite high and low ropes challenge course training.
    • Aquatics Specialist (Lifeguard): Current Lifeguard Certification (or willingness to obtain).
    • Archery Specialist: Must have prior experience with recurve archery. USA Archery Level 1 Instructor certification or equivalent preferred (or willingness to obtain).
    • Art & Nature Specialist: Must have prior experience in teaching arts and crafting programs, willingness to learn and teach outdoor cooking skills, and basic knowledge of the flora and fauna in the area.

    • Attend GSGLA signature events and certain other activities/events (including cookie cupboards, etc.) as assigned.

    Physical Requirements
    • The incumbent must be able to perform this job safely, without endangering the health or safety of him/herself or others.
    • Communicates and works with all ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
    • Observes camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.
    • Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
    • Constantly responds appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
    • Frequently moves luggage, tables, chairs, and program equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
    • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain.
    • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.
    • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation.
    • May lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
    • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.
    • Operate with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, snakes, bats, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.
