ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC, THEATRE & DANCE. As a comprehensive performing arts school set in one of the world's finest public institutions of higher education, the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) is deeply engaged in the creation, practice, scholarship, and pedagogy of music, theatre, and dance. We aim to provide leadership, nationally and internationally, in all three fields. We assert and celebrate the value of the arts to the mission of the University of Michigan. SMTD is strongly committed to access, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression as a means of enacting justice and achieving and sustaining excellence.

    Responsibilities*

Duties: Successful applicants will direct one Main Stage (with orchestra) or one Studio (with piano or chamber orchestra) production per term, while simultaneously leading any of the comprehensive opera workshop classes that are part of a prescribed sequence of courses for both graduates and undergraduates. The possibility also exists to develop and teach additional courses or seminars in related areas, based on individual skills, research interests, and experience.

The appointee will be expected to:

demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching excellence, accommodating a broad range of students of varied identities and backgrounds who seek to explore a range of educational opportunities and career pathways.

The successful candidate will attend departmental meetings.

    Required Qualifications*

    Qualifications :
Please note, this is a one-year, full-time, interim position.

We seek an experienced stage director who is interested in contributing to a vibrant vocal arts program dedicated to the overall development of the classical vocalist in the 21st century, in which opera is an integral component.

The ideal candidate will have a broad and thorough knowledge of operatic repertoire appropriate to both developing and pre-professional artists, prior academic experience in the systematic teaching of stage-centric skills to singers, and/or a sustained and distinguished professional career as a director.

The candidate will also have a demonstrated ability to empower, advocate for, and value a broad range of students of diverse identities and experiences, as shown through pedagogy, mentoring, and related activities.

Additional consideration will be given to applicants whose work history shows an interest in new repertoire and stage practices. A documented history of effective collaboration with creative, design and production teams is crucial.

The applicant should have knowledge of the operatic field as it exists today, and a vision for a methodology in the acquisition of theatrical skills that prepare students for the professional stage and that closely aligns with the overall mission of the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance and the U-M Department of Voice.

    Union Affiliation

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
