- Serves as the primary point of contact for visitor services, which includes greeting and orienting visitors at the front desk, answering visitor questions, answering the phones, and responding to inquiries via email or social media.
- Interprets the history of western North Carolina by conducting educational tours of the historic buildings and grounds for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
- Works with site staff to present curriculum-based museum programming aligned with the NC K-12 Standard Course of Study.
- Works in conjunction with the Assistant Site Manager and the Historic Sites Collections Branch to care for the site's artifact collection.
- Assists in the planning and execution of all special events held at the site throughout the year.
- Engages with the community through educational outreach programs, including visits to area schools, partnerships with local museums and cultural institutions, and virtual talks or programs.
- Assists with general museum operations, including basic housekeeping and care of the facilities.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Must be able to lead groups in a variety of weather situations (cold, heat, etc.)
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to work Tuesday - Saturday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with some overtime, special events, and weekend duties.
- Demonstrated knowledge of state and national history.
- Demonstrated experience with speaking and communicating effectively with a wide variety of people for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrated knowledge of western North Carolina history.
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic collections care and cleaning.

Primary Purpose of the Position:
The Historical Interpreter I position is located at Vance Birthplace State Historic Site in Buncombe County, North Carolina and is responsible for providing high-quality visitor services, thematic tours and programs, curriculum based educational programming, artifact collections care, administrative and clerical support, and community outreach at the Gov.

The Division of State Historic Sites and Properties connects people to North Carolina's history, sharing the power of place to inspire a common future through preservation, education, and transformative engagement.
