    About the Position:

    Description

    DESCRIPTION:
    The City of Roanoke is seeking a Control Room Operator which is a civilian position in the Jail Security Division of the Sheriff's Office. They are unarmed and have no direct physical contact with inmates. They closely monitor inmate activities, open and close security passages to allow movement of deputies and inmates through computer control, and must be capable of quick response in emergency situations. The Roanoke City Sheriff's Office operates as a para-military organization. Control Room Operators report to and receive assignments, instructions, and directions from Deputy Sheriff's, Sergeant Deputy Sheriff's, Lieutenant Deputy Sheriff's, Captain Deputy Sheriff's, Major Deputy Sheriff, the Chief Deputy, and the Sheriff. Control Room Operators work a 12 hour shift that rotates every 2 weeks, work every other weekend and have the general duties and responsibilities prescribed of all members of the Sheriff's Office and such specific duties as are herein prescribed.

    Examples of Duties

    SUMMARY
    The Control Room Operator is a civilian position in the Jail Security Division of the Sheriff's Office. They are unarmed and have no direct physical contact with inmates. They closely monitor inmate activities, open and close security passages to allow movement of deputies and inmates through computer control, and must be capable of quick response in emergency situations.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    It is the duty of the Control Room Operator, under the direction and control of the Jail Watch Commander to:
    Monitor activities of inmates and staff by means of closed circuit television and intercom system
    Maintain proper security, including the control of inmates and personnel when entering or exiting pod vestibules
    Control the entrance and exit of visitors, police officers, and other authorized persons into the jail
    Report infractions of rules and any unusual occurrences
    Monitor and, when designated, dispatch messages by radio communications
    Monitor the fire alarm system and, when system is activated, to take appropriate action
    Keep records and prepare reports
    Comply with all departmental policies, procedures, rules and regulations
    Obey all lawful orders of superior officers
    Participate in training programs/sessions as required
    Perform such other duties as may be assigned
    Limit inmate access to this area as it is controlled and restricted.
    Maintains log of inmate movement throughout the facility.
    Provides information which is legally permissible to citizens, police officers and other criminal justice agencies.
    Ensures compliance with appropriate ACA, NCCHC, and Virginia DOC minimum standards.
    Monitors persons entering and leaving jail.
    Knowledge of policy and procedures to follow in the event of emergencies (i.e. fire evacuations, riots, disturbances, hostage situations, etc.)which may occur within the jail.
    Knowledge of operating procedures as prescribed by Roanoke City Jail Policy and Procedure Manual, as well as the Inmate Handbook.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
    This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
    High school diploma or GED, preferably supplemented with college courses in the field of criminal justice and/or law enforcement; one to two years related experience and/or training in security, law enforcement or public safety or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    LANGUAGE SKILLS
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as laws, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to respond effectively to inquiries orally and in writing.

    REASONING ABILITY
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
