    Job purpose

    The Stage Management Supervisor is a full-time department head level position that leads the Stage Management staff for all Denver Center Theatre Company, Education, and Off-Center productions in six on-site theatres as well as off-site locations. This is a supervisory role with no planned stage management assignments of their own.

    Duties and responsibilities

    • Direct supervisor for all AEA Stage Managers/Assistant Stage Managers, and non-AEA Apprentice Stage Managers.
    • Work with Production Management to determine and hire AEA Stage Managers/Assistant Stage Managers for the season.
    • Lead the process to interview and hire Apprentice Stage Managers per season and serve as mentor to them throughout the season.
    • Essential part of Colorado New Play Summit staff, both in Stage Management, and coordinating other production needs for the Summit.
    • Assist Production Management in development of season calendars (rehearsal and performance schedules) and ensure compliance with AEA rules.
    • Integral member of the Production Department Head team and a key collaborator in fostering and developing those working relationships.
    • Partner with the Equity and Organization Culture team to devise and support inclusive practices in rehearsals, tech processes, and performance runs.
    • Be an active participant and collaborator in equity and inclusion skill-building sessions as part of Artistic and Production leadership.
    • Represent the Denver Center's best interests while balancing union obligations and needs.
    • Plans and oversees the budget for the Stage Management department and appropriate rehearsal room supplies.
    • Maintain Denver Center callboards in the Newman and theatre buildings.
    • And any other duties needed to help drive to our Vision, fulfill our Mission, and abide by Denver Center's values.

    Qualifications

    An ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

    • Demonstrated five to seven years of continuous lead AEA Stage Management experience.
    • Thorough understanding of Actors Equity Association rules and guidelines as they relate to regional theatre.
    • Preferred people management experience and demonstrated history of supervising direct reports.
    • Ability to guide and direct a group of seasoned stage managers to assure a unified approach and continued excellence.
    • Familiarity with theatre practices that support a greater sense of belonging, and demonstrated experience in fostering safe, equitable, and inclusive environments.
    • Ability to balance a compassionate, people-first management approach with the exacting demands and time pressures of the production process.
    • Proficiency in guiding rehearsal and performance processes that thoughtfully support issues of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and disability as they relate to the play's content and/or the production's artistic vision and casting approach.
    • Capacity to solve problems and engage in creative thinking to overcome challenges.
    • Maturity and understanding of the artistic process and excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and diplomacy skills.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of styles and personalities.
    • Proven ability to work independently and collaborate in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
    • Technical knowledge of safe working procedures.
    • Strong background with computers and stage management appropriate software and equipment

    Supervisor responsibilities

    Supervise eight or more seasonal direct reports and casual labor as needed. Assigns and schedules work, provides training, appraises performance, interviews, hires, and initiates disciplinary discussions.

    Working conditions

    Work is split between typical office environment, rehearsal studios, and LORT theatres and off-site performance spaces. Schedule must be flexible to include weekends, evenings, occasional holidays, and long hours during technical rehearsals.

    Physical requirements

    While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to use hands or finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close and distance vision.

    Direct reports

    Stage Managers (6 to 8), Apprentice Stage Managers (2 to 4), and Young Performer Supervisor (as needed)

    Compensation

    $70,000 - $73,000 Annually
