The Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH) is seeking one part-time (22.5 hours/week) qualified ASL/spoken English interpreter, to interpret primarily for MCDHH staff, but also occasionally for community assignments including Press Conferences, platform assignments, in medical and mental health settings, and for VLOGs, ASL translation projects and other assignments as assigned by the Referral Department, by the Supervisor of Interpreters - Denise Martinez, or the Director of Communication Access Services - Cat Dvar.


The part-time ASL/spoken English interpreter will work primarily in the eastern part of Massachusetts, to cover assignments primarily but not exclusively in the Boston, Boston Metro and Southeast areas, as well as remote assignments as needed.


_ Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):_

  • Administers a variety of interpretation/transliteration services for deaf/hard of hearing staff members and others such as community interpreting including in medical and mental health settings, VLOG making and other ASL translation work, inservice trainings, staff and/or client meetings, meetings for the Commissioner, telephone conversations, etc.
  • Ensures Interpreter services provided through the use of American Sign Language, English based sign systems, pantomime, gesture, lip movements without voice, or other modes to facilitate communication between Deaf, late deafened, hard of hearing, deaf/blind, and hearing people.
  • Provides interpreting/transliterating services as assigned by Interpreter Referral Specialists in executive and legislative branches of government.
  • Facilitates interpreter services to MCDHH consumers as appropriate.
  • Acts as backup interpreter, in special situations, for regionally based staff interpreters.
  • Works in collaboration with Referral to ensure interpretation/transliteration services are provided for outside emergencies during normal business hours.
  • Responsible for accurate communication between deaf/hard of hearing and hearing individuals taking into consideration cultural and linguistic differences.
  • Prepares activity reports for the number of hours of interpreting provided. Submits reimbursement information and other pertinent information when appropriate.
  • Assists agency staff as requested with special projects and assignments related to the field of interpreting and/or services for deaf/hard of hearing individuals.
  • Performs related duties such as attending meetings, conferences, trainings and projects as appropriate or assigned by the Director of Communication Access Services.

_Required Qualifications:
_


  • Ability to interpret/transliterate in the business setting and in situations including, but not limited to, Commissioner level meetings, Press Conferences and other platform work, conferences, staff meetings, etc.
  • Knowledge of both formal and informal registers of English and American Sign Language as appropriate for different settings.
  • In depth knowledge and adherence to the RID-NAD Code of Professional Conduct
  • Mastery of specialized vocabulary for both languages (English and ASL): technical, medical, scientific, etc.
  • Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity of cultural and historic references in both deaf and hearing cultures.
  • Capacity to interact effectively with many different kinds of individuals in a variety of settings. Skilled in presenting self in a favorable way to reflect the agency and profession.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and to travel within the state.

  • Knowledge of the MCDHH Interpreter Services' policies and procedures.
  • Understanding of the executive, legislative and judicial systems within the Commonwealth.
  • Increased experience and/or training to upgrade interpreter skill
  • Expertise in relationship building and effective collaboration.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • High level of selfmotivation and accountability, bringing enthusiasm and energy to team and tasks.
  • Detailoriented and highly organized, with strong ability to successfully multitask
