Hastings Mutual is currently looking for an experienced Underwriting professional to join our Commercial Middle Market Underwriting team This is an excellent opportunity to drive our corporate objectives by providing an analysis of our Worker's Compensation policies and exposures.


Position Overview:


The Lead Worker's Compensation Underwriter provides analysis of large Workers Compensation policies and exposures for the purpose of insurability and profitability.

This position also guides the Underwriting team from a quality control perspective to ensure that all production and quality objectives are achieved and delivered in accordance with our underwriting guidelines.

Position Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Achieves and supports annual corporate goals, objectives, and service standards within assigned unit.
  • Leads and participates in meetings, committees, and projects.
  • Completes project work as assigned by the Director of Commercial Underwriting and or Director of Commercial Middle Market Underwriting.
  • Provides production, training, and planning information.
  • Supports various initiatives with Subject Matter Experts (SME), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), Change Management, and Change Agent Network (CAN)
  • Provides oversight and review of larger Workers' Compensation policies over $50k (both new and renewal) to determine insurability and profitability. The overall pricing of accounts is evaluated against risk performance/profitability, account exposures/controls, and AM Best hazard rating.
  • May assist with the placement of applicable Property and or Casualty line exposures with available Reinsurance markets.
  • Monitors and evaluates the work of inhouse and remote staff by consistently completing underwriter account file reviews/audits.
  • Evaluates processes for improved efficiency.
  • Offers guidance to the team in handling issues.
  • Develops and monitors training plans for new hires as well as ongoing training for the current underwriting department.
  • Maintains effective intradepartmental relationships.
  • Actively participates in professional development, i.e., continuing education or selfimprovement.
  • Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business Administration, or Finance preferred, or equivalent work experience and education.
  • Associate in Underwriting (AU) or Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designations preferred.
  • Five to eight years of successful commercial lines underwriting experience, including specific Workers' Compensation underwriting experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt and implement change.
  • Demonstrated PC skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
