    Help us contribute to pediatric research Boston Children's Hospital is focusing research on pediatric medicines and changing children's lives around the world. Charles River Laboratories at BCH is looking for a talented, caring and committed Clinical Veterinarian, Rodent and Surgery to join our Insourcing Solutions team to contribute to these life-saving efforts.

    What you will do

    In this Clinical Veterinarian, Rodent and Surgery role, you will rotate between the Surgical Care and Rodent Clinical Support programs. Participate in the design of research projects and experiments. Confer with investigators and staff regarding the type of animal research conducted and provide advice on veterinary clinical considerations, animal health and welfare, training, procedures, census and/or care of the animals. You will provide veterinary medical services in support of the health and welfare of the animals, as well as administer, or direct the administration, of treatment(s) as appropriate. Conduct routine audits of pharmacy, surgical records, environmental enrichment, and other audits of operational tasks and provide guidance on recordkeeping. Perform and document post-mortem examination of animals-both for the purpose of providing information for a research project or in terms of determining a health issue within the facility. Provide training for the staff as it relates to animal care, and health. In collaboration with other Boston Children's Hospital/ARCH staff members, the IACUC and the IACUC Office administration, you will contribute substantially to the institution's comprehensive program to provide humane care and use of research animals and help to assure compliance with federal regulations governing the care and use of laboratory animals and serve as a voting member of the IACUC.

    For the Surgical Care Program, you will perform technical functions required by research protocols. Place arterial and venous central lines. Develop treatment plans for all animals including post-operative and post-procedure. Provide anesthesia support to all surgical cases, including placement of IV catheters, intubation, and administration of anesthetic agents as well as operates a ventilator and provides full anesthetic support during procedures.

    For the Rodent Clinical Support program, you will provide technical skills training to ARCH veterinary staff as well as the research community on animal handling and restraint, weaning, tail snips, ear tagging, blood and other tissues sample collection, injections, treatments, surgical preparation, pre-, peri- and post-operative observations, and euthanasia. Observe surgeries and procedures as part of the Post Approval Monitoring program. Develop standard operation procedures regarding animal care and treatment regimens for the veterinary staff to follow.

    Who are we looking for?


    A candidate that possesses a DVM or a certificate of training accepted by the AVMA. Must have exposure to field of Laboratory Animal medicine; and participation in 2-5 externships during veterinary school or employment at an institution with a laboratory animal facility required. In addition, at least 1-2 years of experience with surgery and anesthesia in USDA covered species (sheep, swine, ferrets, chinchillas and/or rabbits preferred). Must have Licensure to practice vet medicine in a least 1 U.S. state. USDA accreditation required within a year of hire.

    The pay range for this position is $145,000 - $160,000 USD annually . Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.
