    I. DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

    Job Description Summary:

    The mission of the Department of Engineering Management and Systems Engineering is to deliver an integrated program of research, teaching, and public service to the technology community. The Department develops creative leadership to bridge dynamic, complex technologies and societal needs. This includes delivering instruction in the management of technology and in systems engineering, operations research, and allied fields to undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to assume leadership roles as technology professionals.

    This NIST/PREP Research Associate works on the Hurricane Maria project and independently carries out research/development activities by using quantitative and qualitative methods to collect, analyze and report data activities, under general guidance from the Principal Investigator. Using a certain degree of creativity and latitude, the core responsibilities of this position include making detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results. This position compiles results and prepares technical reports and documentation of outcomes. This role is familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field. Working under general supervision, this position typically reports to a Principal Investigator.

    Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Qualified candidates will hold a master's degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

    Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • MA or MS student in a social science discipline (anthropology, sociology, geography), public health, or a related field with social science methods coursework.
    • 1 year of relevant experience in conducting research.
    • Experience with qualitative coding software (e.g., Atlas. ti, NVivo) and quantitative analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, SPSS, Stata).
    • Knowledge of social science methodologies - both quantitative and qualitative.
    • Ability to work with data of diverse subjects.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Experience with interdisciplinary research is preferred.
    Hiring Range
    $53, $75,348.30 How is pay for new employees determined at GW?
