Job Summary:

Children's Museum Houston (CMH) seeks a Bilingual Outreach Discovery Guide to work with our Science Workshop Program at Edison Middle School.

Children's Museum Houston partners with Edison Middle School to provide a comprehensive summer program for students enrolled at Edison MS and for students that will be attending Edison MS.

The Bilingual Outreach Discovery Guide will work under the supervision of the Science Workshop Site Director and with other CMH Science Workshop staff and volunteers to develop, plan and facilitate activities (including but not limited to woodworking, robotics, and sewing) for children in grades 5 to 8 at Edison Middle School.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Support and assist the Science Workshop Site Director and other Science Workshop staff.
  • Assist the Site Director in developing curriculum for the summer classes including, but not limited to sewing, science projects and woodworking.
  • Facilitate activities, including, but not limited to sewing, science projects and woodworking for children in the summer program.
  • Prepare kits and supplies before the summer program begins.
  • Prepare materials for the classes and set up activity space every day.
  • Assist in cleaning up (including sweeping, wiping surfaces, throwing trash) and prep at the end of each day.
  • Work in the garden with activities such as digging, planting, watering, and moving dirt.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with Edison MS staff, volunteers, and visitors.
  • Collect program attendance, photos, and participant stories for monthly reporting.
  • Monitor students on Fieldtrips.
  • Maintain classroom management with the support of the Site Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Qualifications:


  • Selfstarter who can produce results with limited supervision.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally in English and in Spanish.

Other requirements:


  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
  • Must possess working knowledge of computers and related software.
  • Demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
  • Must be selfmotivated and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to take initiative and possess skills for problem solving and conflict resolution.
  • Must be efficient and detail oriented with a strong customer/constituent focus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management both internal and external to the Museum and with partners.
  • Must be a former Science Workshop student or have worked with Edison Middle School students.
  • Currently reside or have resided in the East End area surrounding Edison Middle School.
  • Must be able to work in an outdoor setting such as working in the garden and participating in hikes.

Education:


  • Current college student preferably in a science related program.

Experience:


  • Background in working with young students.

Physical Requirements:


  • Pushing/pulling cart and dolly
  • Bending at knees
  • Stooping/climbing
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs.
