    Description
    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Obtain blood samples and prepare them for analysis and distribution; instruct patients in appropriate specimen collection procedures; Collect MRSA Pre-Op swabs.
    • Determine appropriate tubes, sample types, and collection timing for the various laboratory tests.
    • Responsible for receiving specimens from in-house and off-site clinics/agencies and determine their acceptability for testing. Navigate and research orders in
    eClinical Works, edit orders, and transmit orders to McKesson efficiently and accurately.
    • Accurate and timely accessioning of patient and testing information into the laboratory information system (LIS) and initial troubleshooting of problems.
    • Accurately identify and screen all Medicare orders for Medical Necessity utilizing McKesson - Pathways Compliance Advisor (PCA); review ABN status with patients or clinics, and obtain appropriate signatures when indicated.
    • Responsible for the general cleanliness and appearance of the phlebotomy area of the laboratory. Tasks involve organizing or removing clutter and related duties.
    Qualifications:
    • Meticulous in transcribing data to computer, able to follow established protocols to ensure correct identity throughout all processes

    • Familiarity with ICD-9 codes and ABN limitations
    • General knowledge of laboratory tests, TAT, special requirements and availability of reference laboratory testing
    • Ability to discern and give attention to detail affectively
    • Requires good written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions
    • Excellent typing skills required for computer data entry
    • Excellent organizational skills, and client relation/interpersonal skills
    External and Internal Contacts: Hospital staff, physicians and physician offices.

    Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses preferred: At least one year post high school training in health related field.

    Maximum Degree requirements and Experience required: ASCP, Registered Phlebotomist Technician.

    Machine, Tools and Equipment: Basic computer skills. Be familiar with Excel and Word.

    Ability to bend the body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knee to come to rest on the knee or knees; bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine; extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction; stand for sustained periods of time; move about on foot to accomplish task; raise objects from a lower to a higher position or move objects horizontally from position to position; pick, pinch, type or otherwise work with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Ability to apply pressure to an object with fingers and palm; perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips; sustain substantial movements of wrist, hands and/or fingers.

    Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Essential functions include activities in which individual must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to patients, physicians, families and other employee accurately, loudly or quickly.

    Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

    Visual acuity sufficient for work that deals largely with preparing and analyzing data, figures, computer terminal and extensive reading.

    Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.

    Good manual dexterity. Able to stand at least 50% of the workday.
