    Job Summary

    UT Southwestern Medical Center is one of the nation's leading centers for cardiac and thoracic surgery. Our Clinical Heart Transplantation program has performed more than 700 heart transplants since our inception in April 1988. Our one-year, five-year, and 10-year survival rates are the best in Texas. Since 1990, our Lung Transplant Program has performed more than 400 lung transplants. Over the last 10 years, actuarial survival rates for the program have consistently exceeded the national average.

    Experience and Education

    • Bachelor's degree in an allied health field, perfusion, or related scientific field and a graduate of an accredited Perfusion program.

    • No experience required.

    Licensure and Certification

    • American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion Certified or certification eligible; Perfusion licensure by Texas Medical Board or meets requirements to obtain licensure.

    • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) required.

    Job Duties
    1. Consults with physician on selection of equipment and techniques to be used during procedures.
    2. Sets up heart-lung machine for surgeons; operates bypass equipment.
    3. Prepares life support system as dictated by cardiac surgery staff.
    4. Conducts bypasses for heart surgeries and liver transplants.
    5. Maintains equipment; performs routine functionality checks of equipment.
    6. Researches special topics and unusual cases to provide most current and effective treatment.
    7. Maintains adequate inventory of supplies.
    8. Assists with laboratory research projects.
    9. Gives in-services for students and residents.
    10. Administers medications, blood components, and anesthetic agents via extracorporeal circuits.
    11. Performs other duties as assigned.
    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Work requires ability to operate heart-lung machine and heater-coder.
    • Work requires proficiency in operation and use of surgical and laboratory equipment, including autotransfusion machine/cell saver, intraaortic balloon pump, and other standard surgical/laboratory equipment.
    • Work requires ability to read and interpret professional journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
    • Work requires ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.
    • Work requires ability to effectively present information and respond to questions groups of supervisors, customers, and general public.
    • Work requires ability to communicate technical concepts and thoughts to management.
    • Work requires ability to work with most complex mathematical concepts.
    • Work requires ability to apply principles of logical thinking to wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
    • Work requires familiarity with medical terminology and perfusion supplies.
    • Work requires ability to sit, stand, talk, walk, hear, smell, reach, have visual acuity, and possess manual dexterity, and lift up to 40 lbs.

    Working Conditions

    Work is performed in an office and clinical environment as well as operating room.

    Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimums require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources or his/her designee.
