The Veterinary Technician II, under general supervision, administers treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under supervision of the professional staff.

Provides clinical assistance to the professional staff and maintains a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

Required Education and Experience:


  • Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years technical experience in veterinary medicine.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry.
  • Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital, such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment preferred.
  • Ability to work with animals.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to plan and organized effectively.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Two years in veterinary emergency and critical care or relevant experience within the Texas A&M University System.
  • Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency Critical Care.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment used within the area of specialization.

Responsibilities:

Coverage of Emergency Receiving Service: Serves as supervisor to student employees and mentors Veterinary Technicians I. Performs triage of patients presenting to the SA-ER Service. Monitors and records vitals of critical patients. Communicates changes in patient status to attending clinician. Administers patient medications and treatments as directed by the clinician. Administers and monitors fluid therapy. Performs pain score assessments. Maintains clean and sanitary patient environment.

Performs medical procedures per clinician's direct: Places and maintains IV catheters. Places and maintains urinary catheters. Places NG tubes. Places and maintains bandages. Performs wound management. Performs medical procedures per clinician's direction.

Medical record keeping: Maintains complete and accurate medical records, ensuring all appropriate fees are captured.

Provides life-sustaining emergency care: Performs CPCR and defibrillation. Provides oxygen therapy. Instructs and supervises students and Veterinary Technicians I, in the absence of a professional staff member, in CPCR techniques. Maintains crash cart, anesthesia machine, and other equipment and supplies needed for CPCR. Restrains patients and monitors safety compliance for patients and staff.

Instructs and guides veterinary students: Instructs veterinary students and Veterinary Technicians I, in the absence of a professional staff member, in emergency procedures and principles. Provides supervision to students performing emergency procedures. Participates in continuing education seminars.

Training Certification: Maintains certification and remains current in RECOVER CPCR, radiation safety and infection control.

Laboratory monitoring: Performs laboratory tests (NOVA, PCV/TS, Alpha Trak BG, Lactometer, IDEXX Procyte, IDEXX Catalyst, IDEXX Sedivue, ISTAT, Snap tests, Canine and Feline Alvedia Blood Type Test, Canine and Feline Alvedia Cross Match Test, Urinalysis). Assists clinicians and students with laboratory sample collection. Performs service and maintenance of equipment. Performs other duties as required
