SUMMARY:

Assist nursing staff in maintaining the surgical schedules by the prompt and thorough decontamination of OR instruments, equipment, and scopes.

Maintains an orderly flow of decontamination, lubrication, packaging, and desired sterilization and disinfection.


QUALIFICATIONS:

HOURS:
Monday - Friday, 6:30am to 4:00pm (shifts vary)


Qualifications:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED required. Minimum six months experience in a Surgery Center or Operating Room environment preferred. Knowledge of autoclaving procedures required. Certification preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
current AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association certification required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Essential functions are those tasks, duties and responsibilities that comprise the means of accomplishing the job's purpose and objectives. Essential functions are critical or fundamental to the performance of the job. They are the major functions for which the person in the job is held accountable.

  • Receipt of surgical supplies and instruments after each surgical case. Thorough cleaning, manually of all lock boxes, canal, joints, etc. Utilization of universal precautions while cleaning any instrument as per OSHA standards.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation and safety features of E.O. and steam process. Knowledge of terminal vs. flash sterilization process as well as identification of heat sensitive equipment.
  • Maintain weekly logs of biological incubated tests.
  • Knowledge of indicators for exposure, as well as proper packaging of materials and items suggested by manufacturers for processing.
  • Put scrub suits and jackets away in lounge. Prepare towel packets, clean autoclave, and do any other duty to keep the department running in a smooth, safe, and efficient way as to AORN standards.
  • Alert purchasing as workroom related supplies are needed, and alert coordinator immediately if equipment appears to be malfunctioning.
  • Must be ambulatory in order that equipment may be expeditiously processed.
  • Assist the physician in the special procedures room. Help hold scope and obtain biopsies. Act as an assistant for physician with equipment during procedure.
  • Keep special procedure room cart and cupboards stocked, neat and orderly; and work together with nursing to expedite procedure and maintain flow of patients.
  • Clean colonoscope manually in preparation for placing it in the medivator for terminal cleaning; know safety and maintenance features of colonoscope and cleaning machine.
  • Maintain professional attitude with patients treating them with respect to their privacy.
  • Attend, if necessary, seminars on GI procedures, equipment, and maintenance.
  • Maintain current BLS certification.
