Sexual Violence Prevention Educator


Reports to:
Director of Sexual Assault Crisis Service (SACS)


Position Summary:


As a member of the YWCA New Britain, and the Sexual Assault Crisis Service (SACS) team, this position is responsible for running primary violence prevention programs for the purposes of preventing sexual violence, increasing the awareness of services for victims, and educating the K-12 community regarding issues of sexual victimization and violence.


Performance Standards:


  • Provide hotline/crisis counseling to a diverse population of primary and secondary survivors of any age who are victims of sexual assault, including response to area hospitals, police stations, court procedures, and other service systems in which assistance has been requested.
  • Responsible for oncall responsibilities as assigned, including carrying a pager 24 hours and responding to clients in a timely fashion. On call 24 hours as back up to staff and volunteers on hotline.
  • Develop and implement primary violence prevention programs specifically designed to address identified populations, including but not limited to K12 students/faculty or personnel.
  • Develop and implement outreach programs and presentations specifically designed to address identified populations (i.e. K12), and provide outreach to any defined geographic regions.
  • Must keep up to date records on client services and outreach efforts provided.
  • Prepare and submit statistical reports as requested by the Directors of SACS.
  • Create and facilitate support groups for higher education/college students, faculty or personnel survivors of sexual violence on a variety of topics (i.e. sexual assault, trauma and coping skills, healthy relationships and boundaries, etc.)
  • Actively participate in outreach teams in defined service area.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of stigmas surrounding sexual violence against K12 students, statutes, and community resources.


Attend staff, personnel, and professional development meetings assigned, including, but not limited to, YWCA and SACS staff meetings, Case Management and Supervision meetings.

Positively promote the purpose of the Sexual Assault Crisis Service, and the YWCA through effective client contact.

Participate in community events that support the SACS mission, i.e. Week Without Violence, Take Back the Night, etc.

Work some evenings, holidays, and weekends as appropriate.

Accept other assignments and projects as appropriate.

Reliably meet deadlines.

Manages time and attendance well.

Follows the organizations policies and procedures.

Follows safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

Follows legal and ethical standards related to job responsibilities.

Demonstrates proficiency in the necessary common and technical knowledge areas required for the position.

Maintain and care for supplies and equipment of the YWCA.


Increasing personal knowledge about individual, interpersonal and institutional levels of racism by actively participating in trainings and organizational or community-based committees.

Seeking input from program participants of various backgrounds on program environment and program elements.

Supporting co-workers and work with diverse teams utilizing best practices to inspire better thinking and solutions


Work Environment:


This position operates in settings which could include office, working outdoors in heat or cold, among other settings and conditions not specifically described.

Specific vision abilities required by the position include close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; must be able to carry 10-20lbs; must be able to adapt to computer systems.


Regular travel throughout our 40+ town territory, in addition there will be travel throughout the state of Connecticut when the need arises.

Travel includes but is not limited to police departments, courthouses, hospitals, schools, community agencies, etc.


Qualifications Required:


Education:


Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology or a related field or equivalent; or Associate's degree in Social Work, Psychology or a related field or equivalent with 2 years relevant experience; or state certified sexual assault crisis Counselor/Advocate with 2-3 years of experience.


Experience:

Experience in counseling, public speaking, and/or outreach activities.

Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Ability to handle crisis situations, as well be able to respond immediately to any emergency situations.


Skills:
Must be able to read, write, speak, understand and relate information in English
