Duties:


  • Performs, reports and records the assigned nursing care in the ambulatory, primary care and subspecialty clinics including but not limited to vital signs
- including pulse, blood pressure, respirations and temperature, pain level, height, weight, pulse oximetry, and fall risk assessment.

  • Sterile and nonsterile specimen collection including phlebotomy and cultures and the administration of vaccinations, tuberculin skin tests and medication treatment injections.
  • Cares for patients of different ages, including young adult, middleaged adults and older adults, demonstrating understanding of how age affects the health care needs of patients.
  • Provides highly specialized nursing care not only to immunocompromised patients but also for patients with other communicable and infectious diseases as well as for travel medicine patients.
  • Requires knowledge and consideration of complicated treatments and procedures for immunocompromised, travel and infectious disease patients.
  • Consistently promotes and provides safe and appropriate nursing care and work will be accomplished in collaboration with other members of the health care team.

  • Position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Immunization screening is required.
  • Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Must obtain/maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support prior to hiring and maintain certification throughout employment.

Basic Requirement for Practical Nurse:


  • In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirement listed below:

Experience:
One year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care which demonstrates experience 1) performing a variety of clinical, educational, and administrative assignments. 2) integrating and assimilating complex data from multiple sources to detect subtle changes in patient status and to treat or prevent potential life-threatening occurrences to the patient.

This definition of experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).


Education:

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
