Let's do this Let's change the world In this vital role, you will be a member of the Engineering Strategic Planning & Operations (SPO) team.

SPO is a selection of business, advisory, finance and risk experts who elevate Engineering's impact and performance by using a broad set of skills - both strategic and technical - to guide leadership, implement priority efforts, manage financial performance, and advance the organization's culture, value, and impact.

We operate as the internal management consulting arm of Global Engineering to enable strategic goals and deliver business results. Engineering plans, designs, operates, and maintains Amgen's global infrastructure through managing ~$1B in capital projects annually.

Additionally, we own Environmental Health and Safety as well as Amgen's Sustainability program which strives to be carbon neutral by 2027.

The SPO team manages the Financials, Strategy Development, Business Performance, Operational Excellence, Risk, Compliance, and Career Development for the department which consists of the following functions:


  • Engineering Technical Authority
  • Global Capital Project Management
  • Project Controls and Strategy
  • Global Facilities Operations
  • Environmental Health, Safety, Sustainability
  • Strategic Planning & Operations

Specific responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

  • Primary responsibilities include serving as the Engineering budget owner ($200M OpEx), leading our financial processes, analyses, and ensuring Engineering successfully balances our strategic objectives as well as financial commitments
  • Lead monthly reporting of budget and actuals, quarterly forecasts, and accruals to perform trended analysis, strategy development and advise senior leaders
  • Prepare and deliver executive level presentations that drive decision making at the highest levels of Engineering and Operations
  • Support/Lead Engineering assessments, technical feasibility, lifecycle impact, and cost analysis of potential Engineering projects, including Digital Transformation and Environmental Sustainability
  • Support/Lead the development and implementation of financial analysis, strategy setting, transformation, innovation, operational excellence, continuous improvement, and digital advancement efforts across all aspects of Engineering; including technologies, processes, and people
  • Understand and support mitigating risk by designing and implementing processes that ensure SOX compliance through leading audit readiness and response for our global capital portfolio
  • Develop and manage a business analyst that reports to this role
  • Role is primarily based out of Thousand Oaks, CA but may have the opportunity for hybrid or remote work

Basic Qualifications:


  • Doctorate degree OR
  • Master's degree and 2 years of finance, accounting, business analytics, or data analytics experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree and 4 years of finance, accounting, business analytics, or data analytics experience OR
  • Associate's degree and 8 years of finance, accounting, business analytics, or data analytics experience OR
  • High school diploma / GED and 10 years of finance, accounting, business analytics, or data analytics experience

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Educational background in business: Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration; MBA and / or CPA a plus
  • 4+ years of related experience in Finance/Accounting functions requiring business/financial analysis
  • Big 4 consulting experience and/or equivalent experience in Biotech within Operations / FP&A
  • Strong skills for data visualization and analytics using tools such as Tableau or Smartsheet
  • Experienced leader with track record of developing successful teams and relationship building across functions
  • Strong executive presence, technical, and business acumen to drive strategy, decision making, and implementation
  • Comfortable owning and resolving complex challenges, independent problem solving, and raising as appropriate to senior leaders
  • Ability to effectively communicate with varied client base and all levels of the organization
