The Office of Academic Affairs engages the entire Garrett community in realizing the excellence and integrity of the educational mission of the institution.

The unit incorporates faculty life and curriculum development, student affairs, library services, tutoring and writing support, access and success, all aspects of academic affairs pertaining to registration and course planning, accreditation, and institutional partnerships.

Academic Affairs at Garrett include the office of the Academic Dean, Dean of Student Life, the Registrar, the Director of Styberg Library, and a team of Advising Specialists.

Creating effective and cohesive systems of communication, connection, and policy and practice across the various units of academic life is a key responsibility of this unit, which is cross-functional and touches every part of the Garrett campus community.


The Associate Vice President for Student Success functions as the primary strategist for developing cross-campus approaches to ensure the integration and excellence of the student experience at the intersections of academic success and student life.

The AVP develops and, manages advising strategies and comprehensive approaches to supporting academic excellence that calibrates to the diversity of Garrett students, including their diverse educational contexts (in residence, commuter, and remote students; as well as domestic U.S. and international students—remote and in person) and across degree programs (Masters, DMin and PhD).

The AVP is charged with innovating to develop best practices—and the policies and professional development approaches necessary for staff and faculty to support best practices—to ensure that cohesion and integration mark the entirety of Garrett student experiences.


Areas of responsibility for the Associate Vice President include developing outstanding student onboarding, clarity of paths to degree completion, accessible and equitable resourcing for academic excellence and advising support, high caliber interactions with institutional technology and instructional design, clear and supportive policies related to residential/off-campus/remote aspects of the whole of student life.

Interfacing with and developing coordinated efforts among the staff responsible for key aspects of the student experience is a primary aspect of the AVP role.


The AVP is also a thought partner and co-strategist as Garrett continues to develop several international institutional partnerships as part of its ongoing strategic plan, and plays a key role in developing educational policy, process, and procedures in these unique and innovative educational hubs.

The AVP will also play a key role as a liasion with units beyond academic affairs—including admissions, enrollment and financial aid.


This position requires a person who is an excellent communicator and strategic thinker, able to envision and implement better practices by developing the systems necessary for execution.

The person in this role must be student-centered and mission aligned.


The Associate Vice President serves as the chief office reporting to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and provides supervision to the Office of Student Life (Dean of Students) as well as the Specialist Advising Team.
