    The Psychologist Senior is involved in the development, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of behavior treatment and training programs for individuals with significant intellectual and/or developmental disabilities who may also have other physical and/or psychiatric conditions.

    The Psychologist Senior is assisted by the Staff Psychologists and Behavior Program Specialists (BPSs) whom s/he supervises.


    Job responsibilities include the following:

    • Completion of psychological evaluations and functional assessments and diagnosis assignment
    • Participation in interdisciplinary process
    • Maintain knowledge of and adherence to applicable policies and regulations
    • Prepare data analysis and monitoring restrictive programs
    • Conduct staff training
    • Engage in direct client contacts and therapy

    Work Schedule: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday (Flex)

    Qualified candidates must document on the application that they clearly possess all of the following:


    • Maintain awareness of current psychological practice through review of literature and attending workshops.
    • Thorough knowledge of the special needs of the emotionally and socially distressed, intellectually and developmentally disabled, and disadvantaged.
    • Thorough knowledge of principles of therapeutic intervention, including behavior modification.
    • Through knowledge of objective psychological, educational and developmental tests.
    • Advanced skill in the proper application and interpretation of those tests, and in preparing and presenting reports.
    • Skills in relating expressively with others

    Management Preferences:

    • Work experience with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is necessary in order to carry out full duties as outlined in the position.
    • Experience in addressing the psychological needs of individuals diagnosed with intellectual/developmental along with severe behavioral and emotional problems.
    • Knowledge of the use of psychoactive medication, research design and techniques.
    • Ability to aid in the planning, direction, and coordination of a comprehensive and diversified program of psychological services

    Physical Requirements:


    Physical effort is minimal except at times when implementing physical interventions which may be required for the safety of clients and staff, when attending Center training on these interventions, and when training staff on the implementation of these procedures which could be physically demanding.

    Eligibility for licensure in North Carolina under the provisions of the NC Psychology Practice Act (G.S and two years of professional psychological experience, one of which must be postdoctoral. Refer to the law for specifics regarding experience requirements.

    Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

    Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

    A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

    An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:

    (1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);

    (2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;

    (3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
